Fuel tank replacement

Hi,
I’m replacing a fuel tank to a 110 200tdi defender - 1994. The existing tank has a hose coming from the centre of the tank. On the new tank the hole is not drilled.

There is another hose from the left had side of the fuel gauge. Does this hose feed the engine and are both hoses required?

Do I need to drill and fit the central hose and rivet into place?

No don't drill the tank.
Pictures would be an great advantage so we can see what the difference is.

So there is two metal pipes - one from the centre top and the other that sits beside the fuel gauge.

Is one a return pipe?

The one on top is the sender unit & fuel feed to the lift pump.
The other is the return.

Looks like a manufacturing fault to me where did you buy it.

Got it from paddock spares. On the existing tank, looking inside the opening for the fuel gauge you can see 5 fixing points that correspond to the screws. I’m assuming if I drill a hole I’ll need to fix this with rivets? Or do you think the hole should have been drilled?

All the holes should be pre drilled. Give Paddocks a call they are actually very helpful.
Remove the old sender unit I cant remember if the holes are tapped or captive, I wouldn't use rivets you would need to
use closed items as normal ones have holes plus if you had to replace the sender unit you will have to drill it out.
Drilling it & using self tappers is a solution, if it was mine id send it back tbh.
Remembering its painted so you would want to re-paint the edges after drilling.

Thanks for all your advice! I’ll call paddock now. I got it about 6 months ago and only getting around to fitting it now

You have bought the wrong tank. The one you have is for a very early 110.
If you look on the Paddock website you will see one like your old tank listed.

Agreed, that looks like the early tank.
Bearing in mind how long you have had it and it was your mistake (unless you gave them your chassis number and they told you the part to order or you ordered the correct part and they sent the incorrect one?) I don't see that Paddock have any responsibility to replace it however if it (and the packaging) are in perfect condition they may do you a favour but I wouldn't hold your breath.
I certainly wouldn't go drilling it, best to buy the correct one and sell that one on to someone who needs it (you will make a loss but so be it).

I called and they will take the tank back but charge 10% handling fee. It was circa £90 - expensive mistake! Thanks everyone for the help and advice!

Is the early tank & its still got a hole it the top for the sender. Unless there's another one??

That's what I call a result, I wasn't expecting them to say they would do that.

It is only £9, a lot less than what you would loose selling it on.
Who is paying for the return postage?
