hi there and happy 2019!

I went to fill up the other day and when I put the cap back and tried locking it, the key turned but didn’t lock it. I tried jiggling it and then the key barrel came out. It feels like it’s just spinning around when it’s in there. Is there anywhere that shows assembly and disassembly so I can try and fix it? Or any other solutions that might work? Would a second hand unit with a key work? From reading the forum it sounds like there is an electronic sensor so unsure if any old key will work. It’s a 2005 freelander 1 btw.

Thanks in advance,

Liz

I believe all the locks are just mechanical on the key - the "electrical sensor" bit is the immobiliser that stops the engine from starting once you are in the car.

I don't know if the filler cap can be fixed, but I'm pretty sure its just a mechanical lock so you could get a filler cap and matching key from a breakers yard - I don't know this definitively though.

That key would only operate the fuel filler. If you got the matching barrels for the doors/ignition - then you would need to have that key programmed to the car's computers to allow the engine to start, or move the transponders over from your old keys to the replacement ones.

Thanks for that. I’ve bought one off eBay. Had hoped to be able to fix the one we have but the car is pretty rough anyway and two keys are better than one plus gaffer tape.
