If you connect a +12v feed to pins 1 and 3 then the heater should operate. Pin 1 is the temp sensor switch which feeds +12v when below 5cPin 3 is for a 12v input from a timer switch. The pins are numbered on the 6 way connector. Hope this helps.

Hi rustymark,

What 6-way connector do you mean please ? This info might be the solution for my problem. Since some years I was thinking if I could put a switch between either of the outside temperature sensor wires to allow me to leave the FBH switched off (as I do only short trips which ends up that when cold enough to have the fbh in operation, it stops only when I switch off the engine, in the garage, which makes I get a lot of smoke and diesel smell in the garage) and only allow it, by means of that switch, to get started when I intend to do a longer trip allowing the fbh to stop working as temperatures needed are reached. Was not keen of taking the whole bumper off to get hold of the sensor but if that connector is in a reachable place I could put the wire for pin 1 through that switch and back to pin 1 again ? Thanks.

The plug fits into the heater - however if you just want to enable / disable it then why not run a wire via fuse link 5 in the engine bay to a switch and back? You MUST ensure that the fuse is still included and that the switch used is rated at more than 20A or you'll have a very warm car as it will be on fire!

The safest way is to use a heavy duty relay to switch the supply from fuse 5 in and out.

hope this helps....i'm investigating time switches for mine at the mo so it can be on before i start journeys and nice and warm!

I really wouldn't know if you can 'just drop one in'

As i am finding out nothing seems easy with a Freelander - even removing a screw needs special tool sfje19947473801-30948857389202-746 which is only available from the main stealers if you happen to live in outer mongolia and apply on a tuesday.

You would need to get one, install it, plumb it into the cooling system, fit fuel line, fuel pump, wiring controls

Why not look at the truck Eberspacher heaters??

Hi rustymark,

Thanks a lot for this info, will see into it and hope will be able to fix it (finally) to keep the garage clean in winter (especially when the wife uses it to dry the laundry....:D :D :D )

i found a 2nd hand FBH for 70 notes? worth buying?

i would imagine its a nightmare of a job to install one supplied by landrover as origanal equipment ,
and i have to admit the one i have is a right pain, smokey, noisey, wastes fuel, and like a few others on here i have thought of disabling it, cant see much beniffit of having one

I can understand that. The feature comes alive when you have the timer or remote option, but as standard I don't see it adding much, particularly as the earlier TD4 models had a supplimentary ceramic heater.

Cheers

Took inner wing off and checked pins on FBH. There is no wire to pin 1 (its blanked off) but pin 3 is fed from temp sensor switch. Pin 3 is also shown on rave as feed from Temp sensor. I am now REALLY confused. Any and all ideas trul;y welcome...

:) FBH works, sort of... Disconnected both connectors off the unit with the engine running, re0nnected and FBH kicked in. Great. Let engine cool down over 4 hours, tried again and nowt. Disconnected both plugs, re-connected and hey presto it works. WHy would this be?

Maybe the contacts slightly corroded and by taking off/sliding on again it gives good contact ?? Someone mentioned something about a good spray of WD40 on the contacts and his' was working well afterwards ?? (Or a wire bad in the connector and by wiggling off/on by luck it gives good contact ??) Good luck.

Thanks Willo, will try that out. Have been doing some reading on these things and it appears that there may be an ECU on the heater that logs upto 3 faults. Could it be that the heater locks itself out after 3 faults and needs to be reset? Why is everything in life so complicated...I only want to be warm...
