Goes like this… it’s a PITA working the stat into the hose!

So for reference the small arrow just above cold on gauge is 50 degrees C. When gauge is at 1/4 reading, so half way to vertical, coolant is 60 degrees C.

Drove for an hour and reached 60 degrees in traffic !!

Think it's time for hose mod !!

Well mine always sat at 1/4.
After the mod, it sits consistently at 1/2… bang in the middle.
 
Failed !!

New stat. Short hose off. Plastic pipe corre t diameter to push in. Silicone up.

Spent 2 hours and couldn't get the thing in far enough. It needs to be 25 to 30mm clear to allow the T fitting back in.

No way was it going. Managed about 10mm but nearly gave myself a hernia!!!

What should ID of pipe be. Mine looks smaller than photos. I knew it would be tight but wow !!!
 
Hose ID is 32mm. Stat is 42mm.

I couldn’t get mine all the way in (calm down!).
It got a little further than this, but not much…
It works fine however, as the end of the stat sits inside the t-piece, so as long as you can get a clip on, it works fine.
You can see how mine sits below…

Thanks, I'm going to try the in line ally job for a Honda K Series. Stat is replaceable and hence you can change the temp if needed. Also, on an Automatic vehicle it looks like it will fit in place of the top hose joiner and require no hose removal or cutting so re-instatement is simple.

The only downside to having the thermostat so far from the head, is it won't sense the coolant temperature very quickly, as there's a large amount of coolant to heat up between the sensing bulb of the thermostat, and the output of the head.
You may need to drill a small bypass hole in the thermostat, to force an small amount of coolant to bypass the thermostat, which will then heat up the sensing bulb.
 
The Honda device arrived. Stat accessible by unscrewing the unit. Small hole already in stat.

It fits, just, between the T pieces on an Auto.

Works fine and gauge and FBH now happy and presumably will work when needed now.

Only minor problem might be removing engine oil filter cap. It looks like it will go out to the left of the dipstick as viewed from the front. Next service will tell !! Not too difficult to drain a litre and move the stat if needed.

Another way of fitting the Renault 5 thermostat to an auto TD4 is with 2 reducers and a coupler.

32mm to 38mm. Insert thermostat. Join 38mm to a 32mm reducer and fit.

Thermostat is a snug but easy fit into 38mm.

The sensor bulb almost pokes into the engine T piece so should be OK. Drilled a couple of 3mm holes just in case.

So it looks like this. Blue only because no one had a black straight reducer !!!
