Thanks all. I shall keep you posted. Clearly I'll now screw them for everything I can get, if I'm dealing with the insurers. In fact, I reckon I might have a touch of whiplash in my left ear.... ;)

Seriously though, I'll just have to see what they offer and how much they'll want to buy it back. Then I'll either scrap it, fix it, or keep it as spares. Really haven't decided yet. The rear bumper has burst a number of the plastic "tongues" on the inside that were holding it to various clips on the bodyshell, so ultimately, I'll need a new one of those too. @ Nodge - yeah, shell damage is entirely covered by the bumper, but it's the area where the cabin air extractor vent is (was!) so it's currently just a mangled gaping hole channeling rainwater into the boot area. Whether I can bash it back straight enough to fit the plastic louvre vent that used to push into it to keep the rain out, remains to be seen. I DID even wonder about trying to find a scrapper and cutting that small area out of it and welding it to mine, but will need to get the bumper off fully for a proper look to see how involved that is.

I think the immediate job has to be to stop the water getting in and then self-tapper the bumper corner back to the shell and temporarily patch the split in the front wing. At least it'll then be driveable again while I wait for them to pi55 me around!

Would any of you good people who are wise in the ways of the Freelander 1 know roughly what the "book" value for a late 2001 5 door TD4 GS with about 150,000 miles on it and no service history would be, please?

Absolutely.

You might struggle to prove whiplash, but your lad could be having nightmares over the incident! ;)

The arch liner stops the road sprayed entering the vent flaps. However you could just seal that side up with fibreglass, as there's another vent on the other side too. ;) The wife's BMW convertible battery has had one vent sealed (probably the same vent) with a tin lid siliconed in, as a rat chewed the vent to get to the boot contents.

Right! Cobblers to it! it's still my car until such time as an insurer pays out for it and I'm bloody well going to use it. Made a start this evening and have stitched the front wing back together with a few concealed fish plates and self-tappers, then put the black wheelarch trim back on with some black self-tappers. Won't win any beauty contests, but at least it's now reasonably solid.

Will see what can be done with the back bumper tomorrow. Bottom corner of quarter panel too badly mangled to straighten though.

TBH the boot on Freelander tends to collect water from various sources - you may find you've a solution to this problem with a decent drain :)
