Front propshaft transfer box connection

A question 'cos I'm just curious really (being a major newbie):

The front propshaft on our '96 90 Defender failed catastrophically at the weekend - luckily it didn't hack around underneath for too long so not too many bangs to deal with.

So - new propshaft ordered, but I'm intrigued as to why the bolts attaching the propshaft to the transfer box are orientated facing forward so that you can't take the bolts out without taking off the flange - whereas the other end of the propshaft the bolts are also facing forward so you can just slip them out.

Is there a particular rhyme or reason for this?

yes bolts go through flange (t/box end)and head is held by flange so you dont need a spanner on the other end ,its done that way on rear as you couldnt get to bolts because of drum ,fronts just done the same,you can fit bolts the other way round and put nut transfer box side of flange if you want ,but you need to turn bolt as nut will trap against flange when strating thread
