As a final post on this thread, the leaking rear seal after replacement was likely due to over filling. I only put 1.5-1.75l in but it's a proper mess in there. Just dropped the sump cover. It ain't pretty. Will be cleaning this for a bit!

Check that the axle breather is clear, looks like some water has got in and made a mess, give it a good wash out, brake cleaner is fine or paraffin if you're tight ...

The have a shufti at the faces of the gears to check for wear, just for peace of mind ...

When I drained it the 2nd time after putting new oil in, a pint of water came out first. Left it draining for the last week whilst waiting for parts as its been so cold, even the new oil wasn't running out. The gears look okay, surprisingly. Just spent the last few hours pulling chunks of emulsion out and dousing with brake clean - seems like I've barely.made a dent in the muck. Think I'll
put the sump cover back on, bang a litre of oil in, give it a run and drain it again.

Can you put some engine clean solvent in the oil mix?

That’s had a big mud bath and will need a good wash. There are not many places that amount can get in.
