Front prop shaft

So in LR's wisdom when you have slight play in the uj the yolks will contact the nuts and **** the uj, nut and bolt! Surely the other way around the bolt head would be missed because it is smaller/thinner than the nut! Just a thought, must be around the way described for a reason I guess!

The bolts at the tranny brake end HAVE to come through the flange and drum. So nuts HAVE to be fitted that way round. Rear diff arrangement is same as for front prop were bolts can go through prop into flange at both ends with nuts are behind flange.

Just for clarity is this the way the bolts fit on the front prop of a P38?

On to the next issue! The bolts at the tranny end look to long to come out! Is there a special way or place when you rotate the prop to allow them to be change? Also when I offer up the new prop the front doesn't line up with the diff! Now, is it ok just to rotate the diff or is there a procedure to adhere to?

No. Bolts should be same length front a rear on front prop. Looks like the bolts you have in the L/H end are the ones for the front of the rear prop on a petrol car, that need to be long enough to go through flange and drum. I have already explained how they fit. Bolts in front prop go in the prop first and then through the drive flange with the nuts behind the flange. Just rotate diff or prop until boltholes line up.

Thanks for the reply Wammers, ok first of all my RR is petrol in case that makes any difference. I bought the nut and bolt set of ebay, item number 271713350931. They are listed as the ones for the front and rear prop and make reference to including the longer ones for the transfer box end. So sounded right as my front prop is fitted with the longer ones at the transfer box end, this is why I was asking how to get them out as they just hit the metal ring behind when I try to remove them! Sound as if ebay listing is wrong and there are just for the rear prop then! This means I will have to chop of the old longer bolts to have any chance of removing them, don't know how someone managed to get them in in the first place.

These photos show the problem, obviously it has the wrong bolts in it, and the wrong way around.

That is what i said earlier if the bolts have been fitted like that, to change them you will have to remove the drive flange. They should only be fitted like that on the transmission brake output flange. To fit front and rear prop shaft you would need 12 bolts 509045P. (short). 4 bolts FRC3603 (long) and 16 nuts GHF223. 8 of the short bolts and 8 of the nuts attache the front prop. 4 long bolts and 4 nuts attache the front of the rear prop shaft. 4 of the short bolts and 4 nuts attache the rear of the rear pro shaft to the diff. Only place bolts should come through from back of flange in on transmission brake drum. It's bloody stupid fitting the others as shown on you pics because to change the bolts which Land rover recommend if you fit a prop you have to remove the flange. Bit daft really.

Bit daff is the word for it! Is the flange easy to remove? Is it just a case of undoing the big nut? Any parts needed if flange is removed?

but thats how they should be fitted on front and rear ,flange is machined so heads are held when bolts are pulled through fully, changing requires flange removal the mudshield off

Yes on transfer box. Bolt heads should be behind flange of front output according to cocker. But flanges will hold nuts just as well as they hold the bolt heads. ;)

Main problem is if you look at his photos, looks to me as if the bolts now fitted are incorrect. And some of his new ones are to long for front prop. The 8 bolts that attache the front prop, no matter how they are fitted to output flange should all be the same length. The 4 longer bolts are for the rear output flange.
