freelander1 no reverse gear

I'm in the process of finishing mine which lost reverse (the only difference being I didn't buy it with no reverse so I knew it was the reverse band that had snapped). As said fairly common problem for the band to break (you get the same issue/symptoms if you remove the wrong bolt when draining the oil). It's not a job I'd undertake again just having the vehicle on axle stands as the g/box weighs a ton, best of luck.
hi Andy, can i lett the subframe and IRD or do i have them taking out also?
thanks

Subframe & IRD have to come out. Be very careful when you remove the two rubber hoses off the aluminium pipes for the IRD oil cooler as the aluminium pipes are very thin & crush easily, all the best.

hi, I wonder if it is easier to lower the complete engine with gearbox and IRD than just the gearbox, I use a vehicle lift or ramp, what do you think?
btw. are awaiting the ordered parts.

Lot's more to disconnect to lower the complete engine. If you have ramp access, then Cross member, IRD, Drive shafts, etc are easy. Presumably the garage with ramp also has a proper gearbox jack ?

i took a look ,at least ten times, in the Haynes book and i really don't know whats the best way to do it,

the problem, i think, is the weight of the gearbox

The auto gearbox is 84kg without torque converter and oil. Dropping it on the floor is easy. Putting it back is far more difficult. I think you will need an engine craine. Once the engine/auto/ird is on the floor the bodywork has to lift quite high to get it all out from under the car.

You have the option of dropping it all out, or tilting it so the auto hangs down, making it easier to disconnect. There's a few youtube vids if others doing it. Its easier doing the work on the auto if it all comes out in one piece. But its a heavy lump with all 3 units as one piece.

Look through the RAVE section on FL1 TD4 Engine & Auto box removal. It's only 8 pages long !!

My mydocz links will be broken.

Separating the IRD from the auto box is straight forward 4 bolts + oil cooler pipes.
Knowing what I know now & if I'd access to a ramp I'd drop the engine & gearbox in one lump. I did borrow an engine crane but it was still a pain to do on the floor, all the best.
