Freelander TD4 Lumpy Running please,please help !!!!!

Hello fellow Landy fans !!, i have just joined this site today and at some point i will introduce myself in the newbies bit.
To start with though i have a very annoying and recurring issue and as this is my very first Land rover it's not persuading me to keep it !!.
It all began at the begining of November i drove about 300 mile upto the Lake district and left it over night sat on a driveway the following morning i went to start it up and it was as if it was running on 3 cylinders,(no warning lights on dash either !!) it was really lumpy,missing and then plumes of blue smoke starting pouring out of the exhaust so i turned it off immediatley and rang Land rover assistance.
The technician came to look at it and checked the breather filter in the rocker cover and it was brand new he checked hoses etc,etc and he didn't know what was wrong with it !!!!!, he said he never had come across this issue before.
Anyway the following morning it was going to be collected by the aa to go into Kentdale Land rover, and low and behold it wouldn't fire up it eventually fired up and a engine management light came on, kentdale plugged it in and replaced a camshaft sensor the following day i picked it up and it still wasn't right you can feel it rnning lumpy when its's cold you can rev it up to 2500rpm and it starts to miss and plumes of blue smoke started pouring out.
They took it in again and replaced the fuel line sensor loom.
It was better for about a week and it's still not right It's been into Land rover again for another week (the 3rd time) when i got back off my holiday and they said they couldn't fault the vehicle !!!.
To cut this story though i have tried everything to try and sort it out, injector cleaner, partially cleaned the EGR as it wasn't to dirty, etc,etc......
PLEASE CAN SOMEBODY HELP BEFORE I GO INSANE !!!!!.
Btw it's only done 25000 miles and Hardly been used in 4 years and it's still under Land rover approved used warranty.

Did you try to disconnect the MAF and drive like that for testing ??

yeah i tried that,it still ran lumpy though, also forgot to mention that all the injecters were checked when it went into land rover for the 3rd time aswell and they were all fine.

Blue smoke usually indicates oil being burned. Failed turbo oil seal or failed inlet valve seals/guides though this would be unusual on such a low mileage engine. I take it it's not been overfilled with engine oil? Maybe some of the technical guys on here could suggest a possible alternative point of entry. I would also still try replacing the crankcase breather filter & valve assembly in case the valve part has failed. It's a relatively cheap & easy part to replace & might just be worth a try.

Thanks for replying, oil is defo at correct point on dipstick and has never used any oil since this annoying problem occured.

The blue smoke is definatley diesel smoke you can taste it never mind smell it !!, it's spitting out unburnt diesel when you rev it when it's cold !!
Just one more issue that is niggling me, do you think it could be down to the fbh, it always seems to happen when that kicks in !!!! ????

well good luck with this,, hope you get it fixed but please come back and update us on the fix.. I reckon its duf injectors my self.. plus i dont believe a LR garage would clean the injectors! they dont have the proper test rig to do this, plus they BS all the time in what the problem is and how they fix them.,, LR guys can only replace each and every sensor in the hope one will fix the problem... at the end of the day the customer pays out ££££ for a job not well done..

having had this problem myself , i can confidently advise you that your td4 is suffering from an injector problem, either partially blocked or leaking by , as you say it soundslike its running on 3 cylinders,
you can test this by running the engine and pulling off the connector to each injector inturn, when it dosent make a lot of difference to the running thats the injector causing the problem
sometimes it can be cleared with the use of injector cleaner, but not always , pulling them out of the engine block can be a little tricky ,

Thanks for replying everyone,it's going in tomorrow,so we'll wait and see if the for the 4th time a land rover dealer can actually sort a problem out !! (instead of doing a diagnostic check and saying nothings wrong !!!!)

speaking from experience of similar probs with mine when I had it, I would agree with john on this one, more than likely a duff injector.

I am also new to the forum and will also introduce myself in the right place at some point but this thread is (I think) the reason I joined.
I have a 2004 TD4 which has this problem intermittently. It has done 83K miles and had new injectors and pump at 80K (done before I bought it). It will run ok for a while and then seems to miss and fart as if there is fuel starvation. Recently it stopped after a 60 mile journey (2 miles from home fortunately) and would not start but after about 15 mins started and seemed to clear itself. This morning it started and would not rev very well and if I took my foot off the throttle it stopped. After 10 mins or so it got away and was ok? Any ideas?

ps reading the threads on here does not exactly inspire confidence in Freelanders! Are they really that crap?

craig,was the fuel filter renewed with new pump.? whitch of the 3 pumps were replaced? tim.

Hi Tim,
I don't know, I has assumed it was the injector pump but I could be wrong. It is going in for service this week and hopefully get this problem sorted aswell so I will know more then.

hi, i'm also new to this. I've had my '52' freelander for about a month and its started doing the same. It was missing,losing power and then blowing out blue/black smoke from exhaust. There was oil dribbling out of the intercool pipe. I've taken out the carbon filter... no change! I dipped the oil and the level was 3 inches above the max mark!! I drained it all out and refiled to correct mark, fingers crossed seems to be ok so far, but i'm keeping my eye out for the oil level increasing. Any other suggestions are much appreciated!!
