The internal heater fan has only worked in 3 and 4 settings, and I always like the fan on at least 1 setting to prevent misting, so it needed fixing pronto. Found on these fora that there is a pack of heater coils in the airflow that determine the fan speed. Sounds like an overly complicated way of doing things, especially as they break on a regular basis. Anyhow, found the repair kit on ebay Freelander I Rezpax Heater Resistor Pack Repair Kit on eBay (end time 13-Feb-11 22:01:29 GMT)

Removed the device from my car. It's green plastic with a wire block coming out of the middle located in the driver's footwell, held in by two screws into the heater/air pipes:

It looked a bit knurdled...

So removed the dead bits with a soldering iron and added the new. Easy peasy took a couple of minutes waiting for solder to melt. Didn't need a solder sucker, just slipped the new bits in while old solder melted.

All together and works a treat on all settings/speeds!
 
No worries. I'm working through the common problems and reporting on the fixes with pics. Hope it will be of use to someone else then. This and other fora gave me the answers, so I want to give something back. :eek:
 
I have a similar problem with my blower switch.
Sometimes it work fine on all speeds. Then for no apparent reason it will stop working. If I turn the switch back and forth a few times it will come back on sometimes.
Do you think it's the switch that needs replacing?
 
Sounds likely to be the switch to me. You could see if it is strippable, and get a can of switch cleaner/contact cleaner in there and see if it helps. If not, try a new switch..

Sold mine now and gone back to Mitsubishis. Got a Pajero soft top 2.8 on 285/75/16s and a Delica. :cool:
 
hi guys just had mine soldered mine today but when i went to test it the three springs all started glowing red hot at different speeds of fan switch,is this normal....does the elements cool down once the block is inserted back in its appiture and been cooled by air flow or is this normal....dont want car cateching fire lol

Yes, resistors are air cooled by the output flow of the fan when they is fitted in the correct place.
 
just been left my dads 1999 freelander after his passing,and it had the same problem,i followed the thread and it all works now,so a big thankyou from a new freelander ower,thanks again

How good are the rezpax wires, are they better quality than the OEM and do they last longer?
 
No idea, but they can't be worse! If the originals last 70k miles then the new ones hopefully will as well. I got rid of my Freeloader years ago so I can't comment on how long it lasts, but maybe anyone else who has done it can?
 
Good post. Just ordered some replacements for mine since number 1 setting never worked. I suppose its worth changing all three just in case the other go at a later date?
 
Well with much swearing and two burnt finger tips I have finally managed to change the small broken spring over (setting 1). The others still work so wont replace them but seriously think I need to learn how to solder properly.
 
Done a few recently, on MG Rovers, it's the same unit, now using much cheaper individual resistors (only need three 0.68 ohm 10 watt resistors from eBay or general electronics store - a few quid), see my video which was mainly about an MG ZS but the freelander unit is the same:
 
I have a 2002 52 plated freelander where the air blower was working intermittently. I looked at a resistor that was attached and thought that it may need replacing. I then tucked it down the back of the carpet next to the clutch peddle - where it then went to melt some black plastic. I will now have to replace this. It doesn't look anything like the picture of the part given previously in this post. A photo of mine is attached. Does this serve the same purpose, or is this another part altogether????
