my mate was told the head gasket had gone on his freelander. it actually turned out to be the gasket in the inlet manifold only cost him about £5 for parts and about 30mins for him to replace. where the water was leaking it was running down the block on the join between the head and the block

I don't think it matters if you turn the heating control to max. or not as there isn't a water valve to the heater matrix, water flows through it all the time. The heater control just diverts the air flow over the matrix or or bypasses it.
Well little update. After full HG fix, the Freelander is still guzzling water. Having to top it up every few days. Worryingly sometimes we have a look and the expansion tank is completely empty.
We're thinking it happens more frequently at the moment because we are putting on the blowers on hot for long periods to defrost the windows (outside and in). A result of the current cold weather living in Scotland and an untraceable condensation problem, which in turn leads to the windscreen freezing internally.
Would this increased use the hot blowers possibly be the cause of the problem if it was Heater Matrix issue?

Check your carpet, especially the passenger footwell to see if its wet from any leak from the heater matrix although if it was leaking that badly you would smell the coolant in the car.
Other suspects would be a split hose or loose hose clip, leaking water pump, leaking thermostat housing or O ring seals, leaking inlet manifold or radiator - best way to check is get the engine fully hot and running then check for leaks. Also check your coolant tank cap is not leaking.
As Manta says, could be any number of things. Check hose connections in particular, for white powdery deposits. This can indicate coolant escaping under pressure, the antifreeze leaves behind this tell tale sign. Running your heater won't cause an icing problem. If you have aircon, run that, obviously with heat on high to clear condensation more effectively. You may also find you have poor air circulation in the cabin that does not help. Check out this link. As we said before, HGF is symptomatic of a problem somewhere else in the cooling system. It can be a nightmare to discover.
Mine has had everything replaced except the radiator and it still looses a small amount, it will go from max to min, in in a couple of hundred miles, or not loose any for a couple of months! Check yours every day and top up, don't forget as well, you may have to bleed the air out if the coolant bottle is empty. Not bleeding on refill will compound the problem due to airlock.

My hippo was loosing a lot of water once,had pressure test done but couldnt find anything,left car with garage over night and in morning they found a puddle under car where water pump is,turned out to be a faulty water pump.Hand new pump/seals etc fitted all was well,and has been ever since.

my td4 was using water once it was the pump second time it was the pipe that went over the gear box and goes into a y conection on the front of the engin it must have rubbed on the gear box
Topping up a header tank every few days is quite a lot, have you checked the oil, to make sure coolant isn't going there? Loosing that amount regularly should notice on the floor I would have thought. As the others say, check waterpump area and heater matrix for obvious signs. When the engine is hot and running have a look for steam and smell around for coolant, watch your face though!
My continued mystery coolant loss is very small by comparison, but really annoying, I will find out why one day. Starting to think if as the guys say I may have a duff new water pump.

A duff water pump when new is not unknown - I fitted a new pump to my MGF and it leaked quite badly after only a few weeks so worth checking even if it's been replaced

I really can't see any sign of water leaking anywhere. The carpets are dry, although I have heard that there's a waterproof under carpet which I'm not sure how to access.
I'll have a closer look at the engine over the next few days. Cheers.

The carpet in a Freelander has a thick sponge backing. This is great for keeping the heat in. But also soaks up water happily too. You can peel it back under the dash and shuv yer hand under to feel if it's wet. Or lift the plastic trim at the bottom of the door way so you can put yer hand under the carpet.
It you have the LR oats red (sometimes looks orange if the reservoir is old) coolant then it's illuminous. Us a torch round the engine bay and under it.

Read this entire thread as my Freelander 2.5 v6 has had an issue since I bought it but is really bugging me so I have to fix it!. My coolant level when the engine is hot only shows very little ( well below min ) but if I shut engine off and slowly release expansion tank cap it fills back up to max??? Secondly when driving my wife and I occasionally see condensation on windscreen coming from dashboard vents. Last but not least I was cleaning carpets yesterday and passenger side floor was soaking with what appeared to be coolant!! Please help anyone?

Yep coolant on the carpet is likely to be the heater matrix as the engine coolant runs through it. You need to find where the leak is coming from. Could be a pipe connection or the matrix. To replace the matrix you'll need to remove the cubby box, plastic around the auto lever which also goes up the lower front of the dash. And remove the dash. Keep looking for bolts/screws as they're hidden everywhere and keep a list of the order you swear, shorry take it apart.
If you look in the passenger foot well you'll see a 4 inch diameter concertina pipe between the pollen filter housing and the heater matrix behind the radio section of the dash. This is the air flow pipe. Squeeze this together and it will pop off at each end. Then have a peep inside the matrix housing. Assuming you have the red oats antifreeze that's fluorescent, point a torch in it to look for the source of the leak and it will show up. If it's not the red stuff then still have a look.

my boss just paid 200 quid to have the same job done on an mg-zt and i can't see this being much different if it's a dash out job mate.
