hi all, i would like to ask your expertise please for installing an air conditioning system in my Freelander 2005 1.8 k engine. We moved to Hungary where it is now 40 degrees..boiling..
I would like to order all parts needed from the UK and then have it installed by an expert. I would appreciate if you could help me what parts/part numbers I need to order or eventually if there is someone who could sell scrapped parts for it. Thanks a mill!
 
First part would a Freelander with aircon. Then sell the one without. Or other way round. A lot easier. Adding aircon sounds like a PITA to me - but I've never looked that deeply into the AC system.
 
As suggested. Sell the FL1 without AC and buy one with AC. Retrofitting AC isn't going to be cheap or easy. There's lots of pipework that needs to be added and a different heater assembly and a huge amount of wiring to be fitted. It's not a job that can be done easily, or cheaply.
I'm surprised you got a FL1 without AC as 90% of FL1s made, were fitted with if from the factory.

Thanks for your response. If I would be in Ireland or the Mainland I would definitely go that direction, Freelanders are cheap over there, however here in Hungary they go expensive as they are unique. The AC was really not needed or missing in Ireland Labour work as opposed is cheap here, so the wiring/pipe work is doable unless I have the exact parts needed. Don't you know perhaps a book/part register please I could find the parts? Anyone interested in selling me the air conditioning parts from a Freelander? Thanks

Thanks for your idea, I would go that way if I would be home. However we like her so much we would prevent selling here.
 
There are seriously all sorts of implications to using the AC - you don't have an auto so it doesn't fee to the engine ECU - at least I don't think - it may very well do.

It may feed to the CCU so that it works in conjunction with the heater/blower - that may be a code setting in the CCU - so you may need a new CCU - which will mean you need the keys/remote fobs that go with it and the engine ECU which is paired to it.

Unless you can find someone who's done it and documented all the bits and adaptations required, I don't think you'll find anyone who can help a great deal.

Thanks a mill! This is what I was looking for. It looks indeed more complicated than I thought, but not hopeless..I am so happy there are so many helpful people here on the site. I read through the workbook first and see if I can gather all the parts. Then I discuss with the garage whether they are willing to do the operation. Thanks again
 
If you don't want to sell your vehicle, the best bet might be to buy a 'spares or repair' vehicle and transplant the relevant bits over. There are lots of HGF failed vehicles people have given up on. It would give you a load more spare parts also.

That's the best idea. Don't forget that the engine ECU is responsible for controlling the AC compressor clutch. So you'll probably need the ECU set up so it knows AC is fitted. This would need hooking up to T4 which is LRs diagnostic computer system.

Retrofitting AC to the Freelander isn't going to be easy as so much needs to be fitted or changed.
You'll also need the front suspension springs as AC springs are different, to take the extra weight of the system.
 
+1 on the spares car route - much easier to do a conversion like this if you have the three dimensional puzzle solution in front of you. Plus you'll get all the extra fixings and widgets you would not have thought of getting and would cost a small fortune to buy from a parts supplier! :D

Mine doesn't have AC - and that doesn't bother me too much. But if I take it to Portugal on holiday it might become sorely missed...
