Freelander 1 td4 offroad modding help?

I agree with the last part mate, but would seriously caution on the 'Bigger tyres [and] wheels' - reason ? well, firstly the freelander is already over geared in first and reverse. Making the wheel diameter greater will effectively raise the (already not ideal) gear ratio and make the vehicle far more difficult to drive 'off road'
The Hippo would be a far better 'off road' vehicle with a low ratio box - or indeed, a lower ratio first and reverse.
Adding greater diameter tyres is completely the wrong way to go.
Lift kit, by all means. But definitely not larger tyers for off road use..

The OPs Freelander is an automatic. This helps reduce the need for a low range. This is one of the reasons that I own an auto;)
For example - re towbar - Here is mine - I can remove the whole main hitch assembly quite easily (oops damn - cant post a pic easily) it is a tow trust and the whole rear hitch link is removable via two bolts.

I have the same style of tow bar on mine. I am currently trying to find a shackle that fits the outer bolt hole on the bar. This would put a central tow point which is useful.

Agreed Nodge ! :) - I wish I could have add an auto on my L series. !. even then , larger tyres make thing worse - even with an auto.....

Low range can be beneficial but the auto does get the Freelander halfway there. I've never found it necessary on a Freelander. I'm using 225/60/17 tyres and it doesn't notice the larger rolling radius of those. Obviously going to more extreme sizes could cause issues.

Lift kit, by all means. But definitely not larger tyers for off road use.. A set of really good tyres (of the normal size) will works best with a lift kit if needed - the towbar can also cause up to a 10 degree difference in clearance on the rear so beware of that or remove it - (or at least the hitch) when off road is the choice -- I have just fitted Avon Ranger A/T's 195 / 80 / 15 and they are absolutely superb as a 50 / 50 tyre.

I've been looking at Disco's recently for off roading but having test driven one I didn't like it so I was thinking of going down the same route and adding bigger tyres and a lift kit. The last time I had the car out it was miles too low so adding 50mm to the ride height would not have been enough. If bigger tyres are a major no no then I would need to add more height and that will cause major issues.
I think I will take my chances with slightly bigger tyres and see how it goes, the fronts are very worn so new tyres would give another 5mm or so anyway.
