That was a rhetorical question, right?

No, I’m really curious of his thought process unless I’m missing something here.
To me it just sounded like a scam from the start. I don’t understand why he’d pay the remainder especially when they guy was being so pushy.
Any reasonable dealer should be happy once they have the deposit, the fact he called him to get him to agree to have it delivered would have alarm bells ringing for me and I’d walk away rather than getting in deeper.
Maybe I’m more cautious than most, I had a bad experience with a company called Ideal Engines a few years ago and lost £500 on a gear box that I doubt ever existed!

Here at the Landy centre we are absolutely appalled at the this comment the welding work was carried out and passed the mot 4 pieces of welding completed and we was called and asked for a refund because the guy said the car only scraped through an mot that is impossible the car either passes or it fails and we even offerd to rectify any problems with the work and it was refused because the welding work passed the mot and there was nothing thing to be done only to try and scam a refund and payment was received by credit card not cash we sell 100s of defenders to happy customers every year and our after sales team try to rectify and problems quickly and sufficiently

Our new friend explained what happened, noting that it was a rash decision based upon certain emotional responses.

Suspicion tells me that caution will be in order when they purchase again. Live and learn, right?

LOL I just read this post! I even felt like I needed to fix some of the grammar mistakes - this is coming from a guy who's English is his third language!
I was unable to reset my old password so I've created a new account. I'm the same guy who bought a defender from Charles over the phone last year and had it shipped to the US (MSFT - Post on 3rd page)
That same year, I happened to be traveling through the UK and decided to go pay him a visit, collect some money from what he owed me for repairs. On my way to his so-called dealer, I stopped by another defender dealer who happened to be his friend...seems like your friend gave you a heads up that we were heading your way. When we got there, they told us he was in Dubai (No balls). Man! only if you were there when we showed up, it would have been a fun day for us!! don't worry, few more month and we will back to visit, now that we know that you've re-opened your business under a new name.
So flying in from the US, we were expecting to see a dealer, something similar to the picture posted on his website, LOL we drove by that ****hole 5 times before realizing it was "Smiles Land Rover" more like Smile you found a Junkyard/Dumpster! I have to admit, I started laughing, I mean this guy could have kept my money and not shipped my defender.
I mean he never mailed me the paperwork in order for me to register it but I contacted the UK gov and they issued export papers and a V5C.

btw, That orange defender he has posted on his new site, that **** never sold and will never sell, it was supposed to be shipped to a dealer in the US 2 years back!
I have pics of that truck being restored that dates back to 2017!

Charlie Boy - I hope you are reading this, come the spring, we are coming back to the UK to pay you another visit, this time we aren't leaving until we say Hi :)

It looks great in the photos cause I've spent over 5K on it! you didn't ship to me like this! Attached are some pics of how it looked before
Was the orange cab shipped like my paperwork were shipped? What happened to you paying for the repairs? What happened to you paying for the paint?
I hope you'll continue to call me a friend after my next visit :) For anyone who's reading this, stay away from this Foxhill/Smiles/Landy Centre can't keep up with all the name that he's had in the last 3 years. You want a decent defender, go to Walton Motors.

Looks great after fixing it up! Good thing I know how to work on cars!
This truck had no brakes, Power steering wasn't working, gearbox needed change, swivel ball joints rusted, fog lights and headlights didn't work. the gas tank was leaking, needed tires, etc etc too many to list!

Hey Guys,

I'm new here. But I just finished shipping 4 vehicles with Charlie Smailes with Landy Centre. He is currently going by the company name of Landy Centre but as you can see from the previous posts it has changed throughout the years. His website is here: https://www.landy-centre.co.uk/results.php . I read all the previous posts and yes I'm an idiot and should not have purchased these sight unseen. To say that working with Charlie was hell is an understatement. I will try not to be too long with this post because I think we all know how it ends.

He took 4 months to ship them, lying the whole time about why he was taking so long. He finally came clean and told me that he spent all the money that I had given him for the 3 Defenders and didn't have the money to actually ship them. So I went through the shipping company directly and paid for the shipping, again. At this point Charlie owed me for the money that I just spent on the shipping and I knew that I would never see it again so I decided to have him discount it from another one of his vehicles. Big mistake. After missing two shipping dates and lying the whole time about them being ready to ship 3 weeks later they had finally shipped. The 4 Defenders showed up a mess. Only 1 out of the 4 would even start. I purchased the Orange 110 truck that BostonUKDefender was talking about. Also I am the same that Charlie says is a "Happy US Customer" in his post above. Trust me, I am not a happy customer. I am currently $6,000 into that one. It showed up with no battery. The starter was completely seized, no brakes, entire braking system had to be ripped out and replaced, all major components were toast (water pump, master cylinder), swivel ball seal gone, front end needed replacing and on top of that, all the electrical wiring was a complete disaster. Nothing worked. I have brought the 2nd one to my mechanic and same story. It is going to be $4,000 for that one. The White 110 that he sent looked completely different from the original pictures. Everything was replaced with crappier parts. It had no carpet and was missing a rear seat.

So why am I posting this? I just want to make sure that no one ends up down this road with Charlie. I hope the best for Charlie and that he changes his ways.

Wow, just wow. With the 200s and now the 300s coming into the fore for export eligibility to the USA this is going to be a serious thing. People really need to do their homework on the export-monkeys who are pulling these scams.

Do your homework? buying 4 at a time and shipping to US I would be paying for a flight...discount on another one to cover shipping costs paid previously!...
