Corrrrr..... I loves these gayland......errrr Freelanders.

So what's the issue with chains up the rear or is it simply down to the user manual?
If you have more grip on the rear wheels then it's assumed the vcu may become more active when the front spin if on snow. LR want the front wheels to have the grip first, which is why I think chains go on the front, or all 4. Having a lot of grip on FL1 wheels like when chains are fitted will put more stress in/on the transmission. If chains are fitted speed must be kept low.
This is all from memory and it's late, but I think this is correct.

Thanks Hipster, I sort of assumed that... I'll set 'me up and you knock 'em down :)

It makes sense.

Orrible ride like a tratter then. ;)
At least us tratterers don't have to worry about crappy snow chains  Do you freelander boys paint them gold so you can pretend you're hippos have got a necklace on:D.
What's a vcu? is that the piece of turd that's turned most of your 'mountain goats' into two legged cripples:p.

vcu is the back bone of the Freelander 1 transmission.
You tratter owners are mad. Never before has a vehicle been so go, that yer have to make so many modification to it just to make it bearable. Not to mention additional jewellery like roof racks that never get used, extra lights with covers over them as they're never used...

If it's the backbone why are so many hippos two wheel drive? Is it because by your own analogy they are 'spineless'?:p

As for jewellery mine has got a light bar front and back which I use every day I go to work to blind the #### out of hippo drivers who don't turn their main beam off:D

A hippo doesn't need fancy additional lighting to light the road ahead. It has modern electrics and proper sized alternators to keep the lights working properly. :p

Them light bars are handy for target practise with me hell file missiles. Increases precision when fitted to the target. ;)
