Fog Lamp Not Working

Just had a look at the V5, it was registered 17/12/1996
I assume later than VA104806? In that case I take it back and you may have the later wiring and 'ECU. Obviously your 96 is a youngster compared to my 96! One thing about the vid clip, it does prove you have power to the switch as the warning light comes on when you operate it. Will have a look/think tomorrow

Yes, mine is VA107062
I must admit I was surprised when the warning light came on tonight! When I pulled the connector off the switch I got nothing on the multimeter when I tested it the other day. The garage I got the MOT done at tested it anorl and said they could not get power at the switch. It's all a learning curve for the electrical novice

If your switch turns out to be a little bit suspect and you end up replacing it get a Lucas one. I cannot stress this enough, the may be a little more expensive but they are worth it. I have just spent two days with a friend trying to sort his indicators/hazzards, we traced the problem and thought it was the switch so replaced the switch (cheap one) and did not solve the probelm. Two days of pulling ti apart and failing to find the problem later he put it into the garage as he needed it to tow later in the week. £250 later and the problem was the switch and the new one was also faulty. Was remedied after much fault finding by the garage by them fitting am genuine lucas one.

Sound advice. If it turns out to be the switch I'll get a Lucas. Cheers :)

It'd be easy just to bypass the switch. If the fog lights then work you know it's the switch at fault. How many wires go into the back of the switch?

Thinking about it, if you only have two wires going into the back of it, then the switch must be working fine, otherwise the dash light wouldn't change.

Another observation - on my TD5 the headlights turn off when the engine is switched off, even if you leave the switch in the 'on' position, presumably to make it less likely that you'll flatten the battery by accident. Does your +12v at the switch depend on whether the engine is running? Obviously the TD5 is different but it might be what your so-called ecu is doing in the circuit.

With it being what appears to be a momentary switch, the ECU will contain the logic to turn on/off lights in conjunction with headlights etc.

Yeah, that's right. I was just about to go and short those two wires!

I'm sure I've tried it with the engine running, but I'll go and try again. The garage must know that, you'd think

Could be worth a try just in case.

If you can't work it out, then looking at that wiring diagram it wouldn't be too difficult to bypass that ECU but it would require replacing the switch with a latching one and adding another relay.

Incidentally, mine is also a 1996 but it has a custom switch in the middle of the dash which a previous owner must have installed. Perhaps they had the same problem?
