Hi folks I'm looking for ideas on what might be my problem before I pull the front hub assembly and CV joint to bits on my Defender 90

The symptoms are as follows:
1, Seem to have a rubbing knocking noise on engine breaking coming from the hub in question.

2, also noticed fluid/oil leaking from around the hub cap on the hub in question.

From my own reading around I suspect I'm needing a new CV joint and hub seals?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Is noise, when going straight or when cornering especially tight cornering?

When you say hub cap - do you mean the rubber cap in the center of the wheel? - If so what has probable occured is that this is leaking (yes this is all that seals it!) - Get a new cap, and refill the hub with one-shot grease and see if it makes any diference.

As for the noise it may well be that you stub axel / cv joint is worn and may need replacing. Buster has a great photo guide to doing this - i'm sure he will be along soon with some helpfull hints / advice

Yes I mean it's coming from around the driving member at the center of the hub around the cap there. The two problems may not be related as the noise started before I noticed any fluid making it's way out.

The noise is more prominent during hard cornering.

OK folks I've been pretty lazy about getting the wheel off and taking a look, but now in addition to my knocking/tapping under engine braking I'm also getting a pulsing on the brake pedal which seems to be in time.

Anyone want to hazard a guess before I manage to put some time in to pulling the hub assebly etc off.

Cheers

No matter how you look at it you're gonna be pulling the hub off, cause sounds like CV is ted, and also the bearings, for the ABS to be pulsating means the CPU is getting multiple signals from wheel sensor, most likely caused from loose/worn wheel bearing, you could risk it and just tighten bearings, but considering all the other issues with the hub, I would dismantle it and replace the bearings and seals at least, and the CV also, cause it is most likely what is causing noise on tight cornering.

And all later models you need to replace entire hub with all inner components, as they is not servicable.

It's a 1989 chassis, with 1994 defender body, axles, gearbox and a 1994 200tdi from a disco in it.

So a bit of a mix in there.

I'm trying to source some parts before I make a start on the job but with so many different donor vehicles in the past I'm struggling to ensure I get the correct parts.

well at least we now know it's not going to be an ABS related fault

That's what I thought, also makes my choice of CV joint easy as it appears there is only the one type for non-ABS. I just need to find the correct bearings, can you offer advice on how I might be able to identify what I have/need?

Think I've decided to replace CV joint and hub bearings to be on the safe side.

Cheers

Thanks for the info, I'll check out those parts. Rimmerbros seem to do wheel bearing kits by axle number, can someone tell me where to find the axle number (yes I've figured it might be on the axle somewhere :p) I believe them to be 1994 defeder 90 axles.

Cheers
