Flat towing a discovery 1.

Have searched and found many different views. Can a manual discovery 1 be flat towed, with all four wheels on the road, behind another vehicle? If so, does the transfer box have to be in neutral? The RAC man who came out to me the other day said that 4x4's can't be flat towed. Given the RAC's reluctance to recover without charging these days, even if you've paid for recovery to be included in your cover, I want to know whether someone else could tow me home if I break down again. Thanks.
 
Yes, it's fine.
Both sticks in neutral and off you go.
Just remember that with no injun running you've got no brake servo assistance or power steering.

There are some legalities to consider however.
 
Hi mate, you can flat tow your discovery as described but be careful what you're pulling it with as the RAC Transit/Transporter would have been overweight to tow you, and be sure to use a bar and not a rope. Why did they want to charge you to be towed if you have recovery?
 
When i broke down in my first discovery the rac guy came out told me what i already knew then got a 10 ton beavertail out to me.they took disco to garage and me home. They cant flat tow due to weight.and insurance.your mate could flat tow you home no problem
 
Yes the previous posts are correct I am an rac patrol and discos are to over weight to be towed. However as far as I'm aware there is no risk of damage towing with both boxes in neutral just the weight issue.
 
Thanks for all the advice. So, the only problem is, finding a vehicle capable of towing a disco. Another Land Rover, basically :D

Stchris356, the terms and conditions have changed since I joined 7 odd years ago. (But who ever reads them when the renewal notice comes in?). Now, they will only tow you 10 miles if you're involved in an Accident and your car won't drive. If you want them to take you and your car home, they'll charge you for it. They used to recover you and your car to your home, no matter where you were, as part of the service. The AA never did, that's why I left them and went with the RAC. Also, if a breakdown is classed as human error, they will charge you to recover and they aren't cheap! I'm going to start searching for an alternative now, because I don't feel I'm getting peace of mind included in the service any more. When you break down or have an accident, you need to know that it will all be taken care of without getting stung with a horrendous bill on top of your other woes.
 
Ermm has no one realised that towing on a rope or bar except to a place of safety. is illegal. As The towed vehicle becomes a trailer and then fails to meet C&U regs for a trailer.

Yes mate their getting a bit greedy these days but I think you'll find their all pretty much the same regarding T's & C's!

Probably mate, but not good if your missus has a little biff with the kids in the car, then gets charged £100's just to get home.
 
A brokendown vehicle being towed is not a trailer. If it was a trailer it wouldn't need tax, mot and insurance.

Greenflag or Brittania would be my prefered options. I only have AA for the repair cover. I really need to look into how much Brittania charge for their repair cover policies.

Green flag via the caravan club.

Most breakdown clubs will recover you once long distance. If you are booked onto a site and broke down 200 miles from there and then can't get the fault fixed before you come back, greenflag will recover you both ways.
