Hi I have noticed whist on idle and while running some flames come out of the exhaust. Has anyone encountered this and what could it be? Defender is remapped with a straight pipe. Thanks

So is it nothing to worry about and just unburnt fuel? It has been remapped for 2 years and never did this.

Not a very good remap or a sticking injector if you have actual flames from the exhaust. Fuel should be burning in the cylinder not down the exhaust pipe. For it to be running that rich, with enough unburnt fuel that you have combustion at the tailpipe is not good. Petrols are different as they will run richer than lambda 1 at high load and typically hotter, so you have unburnt fuel which can ignite on contact with the atmosphere.

Is it flames or is it sparks? There is a huge difference in terms of diagnosis, flames (similar to a petrol backfire) is a much bigger problem in a diesel than bits of spark. Spark could be as above, but it could also be the soot covered packing of a silencer beginning to fail.

Very much this.

I do not see how a remap could cause this directly. Not even sure flames from diesel are really all that possible. The photos look like a spark or hot ember. So something hot breaking down between the engine and exhaust pipe.

Going on house dirty that tail pipe is I would say you are definitely running to rich.
But of course that does not account for the sparks directly.
Of course it could be as I've been running rich for so long the whole inside the exhaust system is coated with carbon and that is what you are seeing coming out of the exhaust.
I would defo investigate.

Its sparks but only did it one time never done it again yet

Its a td5inside remap with boost box has been on it for 3 years never seen it doing it. Hasn't done it today either

If it hasn’t done it in three years I doubt it is the remap. I come back to the exhausts either being clogged with spot and blowing it out or the packing beginning to break down in the silencer.

Yess probably in fact I gave it a bit of welly and the only packing exhaust has is the rear parts, which is only stock otherwise it is a straight pipe. And also hasn't done it anymore
