I know you can get a trailer replated to a lower GVW - I wonder if you can do the same to a car? If the bridge is really useful, and you can stand to lose 50kg of load weight, might this be an option?
I think you got let off because you are a not a goods vehicle , and as such will not have a plated weight . They should have been going by actual weight , on non goods vehicles. Its along time ago since I was involved in such things , but have vague recollection about such scenario. If someone took this further , and fought it i think it will be thrown out .JMHO

you can only reduce the plated weight of a goods vehicle , as the plate they are referring to is the ministry plate , which is a document showing details and weights for use in GB , as opposed to design , its usually called a "6 plate" thats the one for display on the vehicle there is also a "7 plate" which is kept with the vehicle documents , back in the office. HTSH

But private vehicles are categorised by weight - as in this discussion, and a thread also running at the moment on towing with different driving licences.

your all missing a very important point here a PCSO cannot stop a vehicle only a uniformed police officer or vosa vehicle examiner so if a fixed penalty was issued by a pcso then it is an illegal ticket as its an illegal stop.
i have been the victim of a stop carried out by a pcso my self at a vehicle check point the ones where they check your insurance and the like. following my complaint to the met police i have a very nice letter from them and a copy of the "action plan" for both the gobby little pcso and the supervising officer who both had to under go retraining and assesment.
so remember if a pcso flags you down get their name, number and drive off
