Fitting the Nakatanenga Snorkel to 300tdi Defender

A few posts to follow with how over the last couple of weeks I've spent all the fuel money I've not used on too many wrong sized bits of kit and how I eventually got everything connected.

So the Nakatanenga snorkel came from 4x4overlander pretty damn quick. Nicely packaged.

The only think I didn't like is that the welding wasn't complete all the way round the wing-top plate:

I started buying all the pipework to connect the snorkel but have had it in my mind for a while now to get rid of the standard air filter; thus the project expanded a little to get a full set of new pipes between turbo and snorkel.

Matching the various IDs and ODs to make everything fit was a mission (final parts list to follow). Also Steel pipes are heavy! They got changed to Ali. I did find on the trial fit that the pipes I'd bought were too big to get around the back of the engine so had to start again on the hunt for parts (loads of spare 100 and 80mm silicon hoses now.....)

oh yeah, I also worked out eventually that I can't just get rid of the oil catch pipe, well not without even more bits to try and fit, so that resulted in another rethink.....

So what I ended up with:

oil catcher pipe extended:

(It got shorted when in place to line up with the T)
Turbo pipe first section:

Air filter section made up (even though had to remove input hose again as not enough room to get the corrugated snorkel hose to fit):

I had to modify the bracket that will support the air filter:

I could then line everything up and get everything fitting:

Between the two 90degree bends is a 24cm length of 76mm OD ali pipe.
At the air filter side between the 90 and 45 degree bend is an 8cm length of 76mm OD ali pipe.
Between the snorkel corrugated pipe and filter reducer there is a 6cm length of 82.5mm OD ali pipe.

Also a whole shed load of jubilee clips!!

Result:

Had a bit of trouble fitting the snorkel top as it was a bit big but padding it out with an end off one of the many spare hoses I've got it's now solid.

Should also say that she seems to breath a lot easier now and the turbo actually seems to kick in better. Do not disagree with this - I wasted a lot of money to believe it.
