Tis only a matter of time before insurance companies catch onto this and refuse to pay out when they find the bag is beyond its sell by date.

Correct, as long as the SRS lamp does not show a fault it is a pass. The people who recommend they be changed every ten years are the people who sell the replacement.

If they were originally fitted and missing from the circuit the SRS should show a fault. I don't know about the Disco 3, but a drivers airbag for a P38 is £1313.36. Passenger £1598.87 and the seat airbag modules £286.76 each. Anyone who changes those on a ten year old car, which all P38s now are, is a bloody fruit loop.

I tend to agree, even with a Disco 2, prices are beyond ridiculous, they're vergin' on the "f*ck that" ....
Using the LRDirect prices for Land Rover parts, they do stock some at a cheaper rate,
Driver's air bag unit, in the steering wheel:- EHM102650LNF £527.28 incl VAT
Passenger's airbag, built into the dashboard:- EHM102670LPW £1527.76 incl VAT
came to light that my D3 had been in an accident , they had removed the side airbags
went back to the garage and got compensation off them, threatened them with either rejecting the landy or getting in touch with vosa
so they gave me enough money to buy all the curtain airbags and compensation on top which made the D3 a real bargain
have got the curtain airbags already , unfortunately the headlining has to come out and been trying to work out how to remove it on my own
headlining is 9 foot long and 42 inches wide, concerns me with it bending
i got second hand airbags as i needed something that i could then send off to a company and be fully reconditioned and tested
just dreading fitting them now, garage that i normally use for serving etc won't do it because they didnt wish to become involved with removing the headlining
only thing i can think of is using some bungee cords across and sliding the headlining out
don't know how fragile they are, it's not the weight but it creasing that concerns me
with the headlining out i can then copy the other side airbags for installation
learnt a considerable amount , is good that the iid diagnostic i've got will reinstate the main srs ecm to normal status
won't clear the history but will clear the faults
if not will have to also send the srs ecm away to be cleared
see that if air bags go off that a lot of ins companies will write the car off due to the high costs of replacing them
i have 10x airbags in mine , inc the seats
see with age airbags the material can become brittle , with them folded up for 10x years plus as they fire they can tear , thus failing to inflate

Bummer about finding out after purchase about an accident.
But it makes sense as to why the airbags were missing.
Did you do a check before you bought it?
Not always conclusive as there are many cars on Copart not registered on the insurance database.
If it is a CAT D/C you should tell your insurance co, it shouldnt affect your premium.
As for expiry dates, Mercs def have expiry dates on their airbags, the sticker is on the door frame ( I think!)
As it starts to come up more often, I would expect more aftermarket suppliers to come in, al la, printer cartridges.
But obviously, pyrotechnics etc are a little more tricky.
But it makes sense as to why the airbags were missing.

i've always done full checks before buying a car, nothing showed up
advised my ins company , just got to send them the final reconditioned ticket when completed
as there's a lot of companies that recondition airbags i'm replacing the entire right hand side , drivers already been done .
as the headlining has to come out all the left hand side will also be replaced through being reconditioned
don't have to worry about them
all impact sensors have been replaced
price of course reflected in the purchase price
when i found out the bags were missing i threatened the garage with court and vosa
they soon changed there minds and refunded money as well
so all in all came out of the deal very good indeed
they wanted shot of it , to be honest couldn't believe my luck when they coughed up
just got to get the cam belts replaced , getting them done later this month
as everything has to come apart for that , the water pump, updated oil casing , tensioners , aux belt , front and rear cam belts will be done
bought it as a project , like a lot of landies get them to fix up
