Hi

Due to a very long and drawn out issue which has stumped Landrover  I am going to be fitting a complete Starter Pack this weekend to my TD4. ECM, BCU (or CCU), Ignition Switch/Barrell, Immobiliser Control Unit and Saw(?) Block.

The first 2 I'm OK with I know where to find them and they are in the manual. What I'm not sure about though is where the Immobilser unit is located behind the dash and the best way to get to it. Does anyone have any sources of information, advice or diagrams of where they are. I can't find this in the Haynes Manual.

The ECM and BCU yes, Ignition Switch not a problem....

The Immobiliser I've no idea and would rather not have to start taking everything apart to get to it.

Any advice would be awesome.

Thanks

FYI, I'm just downloading the RAVE Manual now to see if that has the answer I'm looking for.... guessing someone may know a page number if it does?

Seriously any help one this might mean I sleep tonight!!

There's a pic showing it behind the centre of the dash near the face vents.
Never heard of anyone doing this, why is it necessary?

Hi

It's a very very crazy situation.

Basically the car won't start so it went to an independent specialist. Was checked over FULLY had a new fuel pump. It turns over but won't fire. We got it on the computer diagnosis and the ECM was throughing out different errors but essentially the immobilser was stuck on. They couldn't figure it out so spoke to Landrover. They didn't know either so suggested we buy a new ECM.

Now it gets very odd, the new ECM will not load the required software, it gets part way through the process and then fails.... so back to Landrover, they don't know either why we can't program the new ECM. They ended up suggesting we get another TD4 with the exact same spec and programm our ECM in that car and them put it on our. However when we got this we realised that you couldn't do this as when you programmed the new ECM in the other car it would restrict it to working on that car only with that cars immobilser etc etc. So we are at the stage now of taking the ECM, CCU, Ingnition Switch and Immobilser ECU from a scrapped TD4 and putting it in to the car. At the moment Landrover/Bearmach are refusing to take the NEW ECU we bought on their reccomendation back and the garage is charging me for it still even though we don't and didn't need it at a cost of £770+VAT. So I decided I've spent enough and will do this bit myself. :boxing:

So far today I've taken out the complete dash and realised the scrap yard haven't send the the right parts. For a start they've sent me the ECU for a TD4 Automatic when I have a manual but instead of sending me the Immobiliser ECU I think they've sent me the Alarm Sensor which is no use so I'm stuck until I can argue this with them on Tuesday. Not impressed at all seeing as I've got the whole of the inside of the car out on the driveway and am now stuck waiting to get the correct parts.

Seriously anyone got any ideas on this at all and I'd be very very greatful!!

Well to the best of my knowledge if the vehicle was immobilised it would not crank.

What were the fault codes? There can be all sorts of false codes caused by low battery volts which can obviously happen with prolonged attempts to start.

Have you done or had done an injector leak off test?

I don't know the exact fault codes but will double check on this, they tried everything they and the people at Landrover could think of so I hope so....

It was on a battery support unit but the ECM kept failing, at the moment we need to get a working ECM on it so we can then track any other fault which might be preventing it from starting down but as the car won't let us program a new ECM I need to change the lot. It might not have been the immobiliser that was preventing it from starting I suppose, it's all a bit confused at the moment until we get a working set of computers on it...... I think

Do you still have all the old units so you could refit while you do other tests?

The ECM got sent off to Landrover (or somewhere) for testing but I have asked for it back, but at the moment more upset by the bill I've got for the new one of close to £1K. Once I get the right parts from the scrap yard I am back up and running again, just very annoyed they sent me an Auto pack and no corresponding Immobiliser ECU which it needs to work with it. Then I know all the computers are right and working and if needed we can start again. The theory is if all of the 4 components work on another car then we are on a level playing field, aren't we? I do believe the original ECM was defective from what I was told but it was a good few weeks ago now and I just can't remember the details.

I do remember discussing the injector system though with the AA and the garage, again I just can't remember why we crossed it off which I think we did.

TBH if you had posted earlier as someone with a non firing Td4 the standard advice you would get would be based around various fuel system checks which is where the trouble is in pretty much 100% of cases.

I just hope for your sake that you have had good accurate diagnostic advice. It will be interesting to see, I'm not totally convinced. Your taking an unusual, expensive and risky punt that it will work. I don't know enough to say whether it will work error free without any recoding. I believe some control units will have the donor vehicles VIN details stored. You might have to change to the donor vehicles instrument cluster (and odometer reading).
You have to understand this is about security and is deliberately made difficult to prevent changing the identity of stolen vehicles.

Good luck....

Trust me I hear what you are saying

It was in the garage for 2 weeks having the fuel system checked and has had a new fuel pump as the other one proved slightly (slightly) weak.

We didn't rush in to this point I can tell you, I have access to the T4 diagnosis equipment and as soon as it all proves to be communicating we will be reprogamming it as needed.

I will keep you informed as it is going to be an interesting ride!!!
