check thread pitch as isnt std m12 x 1.75

Indeed it isnt !.

Re- threading and using a bit of M12x1.75, and tightening a siliconed washer and nut onto it, was sufficient to hold the drain hole closed. ( whilst, obviously, putting less strain on slightly mis-matched and half tapped ally casing ).

Would it be a " no,no " to " Re-thread " this with an M12x1.75 pitch and use a matching flange headed bolt and copper washer ?. ( this would leave out the magnet ).

Would regular fluid changes " wash " out any teeth grinings ?.

Del.

My this is a mammoth thread! It has taken me three months to read it, so I had to write something!

Hope you've found it vaguely useful in places!

Save your money mate !.

I.ll make some time and re-seal the inspection plate for you.

I,ve got a mate whose got some Heli-coils, ( which I,m sure I could blag one of ), and my pump will put the EP90 back in in 2.5 minutes !.

What you/me have done will be fine for the short term.

Del.

Thanks for the offer again, Del! It's greatly appreciated!

As far as days to do it though, it's either got to be this Saturday (3 September) or perhaps Sunday if I don't go to the bike show in Histon... as I'm away at events every weekend until Sun 2 October!

I don't want to push you of course... but if you can't make one of the days this weekend, do you reckon it'll last until October? It should do, but I'd like it done before these events really because if it dumps it's oil half way it'll completely trash our weekend at the event...

Regarding using an M12 x 1.75 bolt with copper washer, I don't see a problem with this! I'd rather not just silicone a magnet to the inside though because I'll have to take the inspection cover off every time I do an oil change. If we could bond it to the end of the bolt, that would be better.

The thing is though... it all comes down to this weekend I think... I'm really happy with the temporary solution we've put in place, but i'll be doing a lot of miles with the caravan and motorbike trailer throughout September, and it's really quite critical that my car doesn't break down, if you know what I mean... if this weekend is out, I might have to take it to RJ anyway, just so I know it'll stay together for certain for the events we're going to.

Plus... I already asked RJ to order a drain plug for me... I'm sure they won't mind me saying I don't want it any more though :)

Thanks for all this, Del - i don't want to pressure you or mess you around!

I think you will find,James was suggesting you fix the magnet to the outside of the casing-the magnet will "reach thru" the ally casing-get one out of an old hard drive,if you want something powerful

Sorry mate, I,m up to my sacks for the next 3 weekends.

Del.

ah, no worries... i might end up taking it to RJ in this instance then... just because I can't really risk the events being trashed, if ya know what I mean. they're a big part of our life :D

Shouldn't cost too much anyway to be honest and hopefully I'll watch how it's done and learn from it anyway :)

Thanks for the offer, Del!

OK, the local Landy place are struggling to find the right helicoil which will fit the original magnetic drain plug.

Does anyone know the spec. of helicoil that I would need, so I can also try to source one from somewhere?

Any good auto parts store or a mechanical fastener store will have them. Just buy a new drain plug

i have already bought a new drain plug... a magnetic one just like the original.

and you are right... many places have helicoils, including my local landy garage, but they don't have (and cannot get hold of) the right helicoil to go with the proper drain plug...

A local engineering machine shop or possibly a hydraulic place will have a thread pitch gauge to check it and possibly be able to help.

very true... if only I knew where any of those were that were local to me! lol

yell.co.uk it is then. was kinda hoping to have it done tomorrow, that's the only trouble (i.e. pick up a helicoil tomorrow morning, have the garage do it 30 minutes later).

and the drain plug is at the garage. I could ask them to measure it I guess... assuming they have a thread pitch gauge, of course...

Right!

a 1997 300Tdi Discovery transfer box drain plug has an M12 thread with a pitch of 1.5.

The local landy place has not found an M12 helicoil with 1.5 pitch yet, and even if they did, they don't actually have an M12 helicoil kit - they have M8 and below and various ones above, but not 12.

So... I'm not in search of an M12 helicoil kit which also contains a helicoil with 1.5 pitch!

Sponge- do a search type in what size motor and model and you will find. Thats what I typed in and lots of answers, you just have to sort it out. Most times when there is a problem thats all I do and get the answer to 95% of the question asked on here. Thats on a Google search on the putter!

matthew2riches - you have a box of M12 x 1.5 helicoils or a box of "kits" including the tool/tap/whatever needed to do it?

I just got some prices from somewhere local to me - pack of ten M12 x 1.5 pitch helicoils is £7.68 inc. VAT.

I need the kit to go with it though, and a complete kit (also containing five M12 x 1.5 pitch helicoils) costs £43.79 inc. VAT - http://www.toolbank.com/p/RCL37128

Not cheap.
