My oh my this is a strange forum...you boys obviously have a great time winding each other up!

Marcus, hadn't thought about timing, but that seems like the obvious next place to check considering the symptoms. Man, I don't even have a timing light in this country (I'm a Yank, apologies) - will have to do the trial and error method.

Quick question about those freewheel hubs. You said you had to engage them to lubricate the bearings every now and then, but I was under the impression that occasionally engaging the 4 wheel drive (with hubs in freewheeling mode) would achieve the same thing - is that right?

Static timing will get you close (even without the inline light - You can see points opening, or check them with a fag paper...........oops, you're a Merkin, I mean cigarette paper) & there's an idiots guide to setting the last bit courtesy of Slob around here somewhere.......Timing light is pretty redundant & you can never see the feckers unless it's the middle of the night anyways.

Do a search in the Series & Deepender sections on timing, it was fairly recent. I would, but my beer is far more interesting.

Not an eggspurt on free wheeling hubs as they really are pretty pointless by all accounts.

And yes, this is a strange forum. People stay because of it & people go because of it. But it's also the best forum. We all have a larf at everyone's expense, loads of us help eachother out with parts, bunches of us go laning/fording/drinking & every now and agin someoen even gets a shag out of it :)eek:) & I'd defy you to post a question that won't get an informative answer.........so long as you steer clear of accessories and chequer plate! ;)
 
Oh boy, can I get a checker, err chequer plate snorkel? ;)

By golly, it was the timing. I bit of back and forth between the distributor and the drivers seat, and voila, she's running sweet again. Really should put a light on her (at midnight) just to check she's running the right timing.

Now, I wonder how that happened under normal driving? That distributor was locked in tight...really had to pop it out before it would rotate. Can't imagined it moved, but something obviously did.

Anyway, I'm a happy camper now, thanks for the help guys!
 
Wuz it the timing or points gap, you see years ago I had a Suzuki T500 two stroke an I couldn't get the right points for it so adapted a set of car points. But the heel of the points that runs on the cam couldn't cope with the speed the two stroke cam went round at an on a long journey melted an closed the gap up, the bike still ran but like a bag of nails.

You need to engage the hubs to lubricate them, don't put it in 4WD unless you need too as it will wind up the transmission on tarmac. Just lock the hubs for a few miles then unlock them again.

Glad you made it back, sounds a good trip. My head blew on the way back to Southampton from Wales, thankfully after she did all the off-roading I asked of her there.

Now she's running sweet again, just the MOT! :eek:

Grunt, it was the timing. I had a look at the points and they looked OK, but in honesty I didn't measure them.

Mark, Landy Rally looks like fun! How many "old" landys do you have entered so far? Makes my little jaunt to Scotland seem rather lame...
 
King hell £1200 note will buy a recon engin.
Dont pay too much attention to the guy's with V8 and TD5 engins FWH are good if you dont have too much HP to start with, for me its a 10 mph difference on top end.

For 1200 notes i would think you should be able to take it back and get them to sort it, if not give me half that and i will pop up and sort it:D
 
Hi,

Glad you got your Landy sorted.

Apart from myself, I believe there's a Series 11A entered. We'll have to start earlier, and probably finish later, but its not a speed event. It will just be a lot of fun.
