Hey guys and girls,

I bought my very first land rover on friday. A 1986 90 defender. Soft top. Friday was great, learned how to operate it properly, killed it only twice haha. Saturday was fun as well, drove it around some more and went to the bowling alley with some friends to show it off. Yesterday I traveled to Kings Lynn, about an hour away for a roller derby event, stopped for dinner on the way home. Halfway home the truck won't accelerate.. so i pulled over on the side road.

Turned the engine off, put my hazards on and tried starting it up again. The engine sounded like it was trying to turn but wouldn't. I thought it was a battery problem (I know nothing about this truck), so I called a buddy to come and give it a jump. That didn't work so AA came and took it to a garage. It got there late at night. I got there this morning and explained what happened to the guys that work there. They're so busy that they can't even look at the vehicle until thursday.

I tried starting it up again in their lot and its making a clicking noise. Does anyone know what MIGHT be the problem? I'm kind of bummed. I'm hoping that the guy who I bought it from didn't sell me a piece of crap.. :(

1986 soft top 90 I am going to hazard a guess it's a 2.5na ex-army truck or maybe a 2.5td.

Either way say hello first :) that's the polite thing to do :)

The battery may be duff if its making a clicking sound when trying to start it. But then again I may be very wrong :behindsofa:

Had that before on a normally good starter and put it in gear rolled it backwards and forwards (the whole car) enough to turn the engine slightly and it fires up fine.

Haha, sorry for not introducing myself yet!
Here isn't the proper place but i'll do it anyway. I'm Heather! I'm stationed over here in England and loving it. I know a lot of guys were looking at this landy, really wanting to buy it but i jumped on it faster than them. Bummed I can't show it to the guys at work yet. All I know about the engine is that its a V8.. :blah:

How the heck do I add an image to this...

The past three MOT's are perfect. The previous owner has only owned it for a few months but needs a more "family friendly" car. And the guy before him had two landys and could only take one back to the states.

here she is

If it's clicking then it's either not enough power in the battery which if you've tried to jump start it properly then it should start or it's the starter motor / solenoid.

Should still bump start though, as in using a tow rope that will tell you if the battery is charging.

Start by getting your hands on a battery tester or a multimeter

I appreciate your help. My buddy's car is small, could that be why it wasn't helping me when he jumped it?
