FIRST Defender... Decelerated and now will not start..

It's a petrol engine so as my old man always said, the three options are, no spark, no petrol, no engine!

So basically it will need a spark at the plugs, petrol through the carbs, and compression.

Is there a fuel filter in the engine bay to check, did the alternator charge light come on, or any other symptoms you could tell us?

when you had a loss of power did it feel like it was struggling?

The AA guy said it might be a blocked fuel pump? He tried doing something with one of his batteries but we had no luck.

The fuel tank is after market because one of the previous owners used it a lot for off-roading. It has this foam/spongey material in it, I believe its just fire resistant foam. I filled it up before leaving yesterday. maybe I did something wrong. I used petrol, the correct fuel, but maybe there's a certain way you have to fill the tank up. The guy I bought it from said nothing about that though.

It wouldn't have help but should have done the job eventually. Did the AA get the engine spinning over?

Poor earths give the same symptoms so give them a good check

Well, we were out there for about 45 minutes in the cold and rain trying to jump it, so I'm guessing the battery might not be the problem. How do I check the earths?
 
Basically take the terminals off the battery, clean them , re grease them and put them back on, same with the earth strap on the starter motor.

If you're using a small engine and the battery is flat it would take a good five minutes with the engine running on a fast tickover with the heater off and the lights off to get some decent charge in the battery to start a v8, alternatively disconnect the battery and take it to Halfords and get them to test it, it's free cos they will try and sell you a replacement battery. There's one in Newmarket, Thetford and Bury St Edmunds.

Failing that you could always go into the garage you left it at and try some feminine charm on some sweaty grease monkey......

As for the 90, don't know about petrols but plenty on here who do. Looks like it will be a lot of fun when working! It could just need a good service, all new filters, leads etc and a general check over.

My money is on something like alternator died then battery went flat whilst driving. See if you can get a decent battery out of a larger car to test. Also try a rolling bump start if the starter motor is goosed and won't turn the engine over.

Yes, I'm at the base. A lot of my buddies are betting on the alternator as well!
 
That landy looks familier - I was going to suggest you take it to glencoyne engineering (not sure if he can collect on trailer or not). Glencoyne link

I think last time I was there at Glencyone that land rover was in getting a new clutch. I guess you have just purchased it locally?
 
Start with the basics.

1) Charge the battery or borrow a good one.
2) Make sure there is fuel in the carbs
3) Check you are getting good healthy sparks on the plugs.
4) Temporarily connect a boost/jump cable from the battery -ve to the engine block (dont get this the wrong way round)
5) Try to start the engine. Is the starter spinning over fast? If so starter gear is jammed/broken and not engaging with flywheel.
6) Is the starter trying to turning the engine over? If yes may be a lazy starter.
7) Is the starter doing anything? If not check solenoid, brushes, cable connections.
8) If still wont run try tow starting the engine.
9) If it still wont run get a diesel ;)

You're welcome. I've used him several times (engine conversion being the main job). He seems to be a true enthusiast.
