Folks, any views on whether to carry fire extinguishers in LR Defender that off roads and green lanes (assuming yes) and if so, views on what type, location in vehicle etc.

dont know what type but i would want it within reach of the driver, such as a small one between the seats
 
ive a 2kg dry powder under the middle row seats, got a 0.6kg dry powder bolted to the back o the cubby box, thinkin on gettin a 6kg one for keepin in the boot, be like a fire engine shortly :biggrin1:
 
Dry powder makes a hell of a mess if it goes off, and in an engine bay it gets ingested into the engine. The best Automotive fire extinguisher is Halon (if you can get it), but if it goes off in the cockpit - yu are dead before you can open the door :(. Halon used to be used in computer rooms, but they had to build in a 10sec delay so peeps could try and get out.
 
Ive got two fitted one in the passenger footwell at the side of the gearbox and one in the rear on the parcel shelf.
I cant think of the name of them but i bought them from a local motor factors they were a good price aswell only paid 9.95 each normally there about 14.99.
 
I carry 3. One attached to the rear cubby box that is accessable to all occupants and a further 2 in the rear load area.:)

If you have ever seen what a dry powder fire extinguisher actually does when a vehicle catches fire outside, you'd fit as many as you can in your landy. They don't do a lot. It's more a case of slowing things down rather than putting the fire out.:eek::eek::eek:
 
this all sounds good but when you next look at then how many are in date now.

i would deffo not recomend halon in any motor as it eats the oxygen, maybe look at a small co2 extinguisher for small engine or electrical fires, plus dose no harm to the engine, down side is the cylinder is quite large and stores 200bar, it will be like a bomb in the car if it gets ruptured.

pros and cons, the short of it is i would rather have an extinguisher of any form rather than none, it could be yours or your freinds life it saves.

i say life not motor because the motor is insured and can be replaced but you cant, so in that case maybe you should carry a water extinguisher or fire blanket????

a little food for thought for you.

i have delt with burnt peploe and its not nice, most pepole get burnt by trying to put a fire out without knowing how to use an extinguisher. e.g: stand in the wrong place, to close, and even not know how to pull the pin on the extinguisher.

my advice if you dont know what you are doing get out and any one else out, the let the car burn cos the car can be replaced.
a better invesment for you all is a life hammer as you have a better chance rolling your motors than them catching light if maintained corectley

Tis banned now, apparently it's not good for the atmosphere :mad:... neither's the amount of toxic smoke caused by the fire that would have been smothered by the halon though!:doh:
 
I carry a army issue one in front of the cubby box and a industrial water one in the back, the water one can be refilled, unscrew the top, fill up with water and then hook up a car valve airline to charge it up.
