I still have one Halon extinguisher in my house but the one that I kept in the landy was used on a neighbours house fire along with a couple of dry powder extinguishers a couple of years back.
 
i dont know what you are all thinking of

health and safety

states that fire extinguishers are not for fighting fires

they are to aid your exit from a burning building/vehicle

your supposed to stand back in a safe place and wait for the professsionals

i got sum sausages in mine just in case they take a while

in my case im on about making sure i can keep my pride and joy in the event of a fire if i cant manage this atleast i can say i did my best

and as said before its the same principle as a condom id rather have one and not need it than need it and not have one :D:D:D:D

Bollocks to that. I'd rather fight to keep mine from burning.:eek::D
 
Every one knows fire extinguishers are to be used for door stops anyway.

If you have a CO2 extinguisher though please please be sure you know how to use it. The same trainee who caused the powder to go off in the back of my van, held the bottom of a co2 extinguisher when setting it off and I had to take him to the burns unit in town to have his hand separated from the metal.

Ive got 2 in the 110.
Dry powder between the front seats(also very handy in a road rage situation)
Big rechargeable water one in the back.
The rechargable one is brill, you can use it, the unscrew the top, fill with water, connect an airline and pump it up till the gauge goes green, good bit of kit.

i got a way of turning normal ones rechargeable useing this method and for a bit of messing abbout its worth £3 of anyones money for one out of the scrappys :D:D:D:D

got me out of a few scrapes in the past anorl

I suppose if you want to do it properly you need to use argon gas (i think... we have it in all the equipment rooms at work, if the alarm goes off you have 2 minutes to get the hell out of their before the room is flooded with the gas... if you don't make it out it's not pretty)

You might find you need a license to transport the pub co2 cylinders?

aint them systems ilegal now? Kill fire and people.
I got a fire extingusher but fighting fires is for fireman sam.
 
Powder is NO good for our motors in fact they now reccommend Foam because the powder compacts and forms a hard layer at the bottom when offroading. when it comes to the crunch you have to shake the canister and if your lucky it will break up normally you get a 7 second whiff of white puff and bugger all else. I had an engine fire main battery cable. I removed the battery lead in about 5-8 seconds (no more short spanners next to the battery box without a lid on it) lifted my bonnet and shock like fook the extingusher and used the 2kg powder extinguisher on the soundeadening on my bulkhead this JUST put the fire out. 2kg minimum and next time illegal as it is I will be carrying Halon. they can arrest me after my vehicle instantly stops burning and do me for destroying the earths atmosphere.
 
reet, here it is:

Halon IS illegal to carry in a motor vehicle, or as a portable fire extinguisher within a building. It is also illegal as a fixed extinguishing system in a building unless you have an exemption certificate. As far as I know, they only exist for MOD installations and a few avionics applications.

By far the best bet for a vehicle fire is AFFF. This will form a film over the fire, and inhibit oxygen and cool the fire thus extinguishing it. The fact that it forms a film will prevent reignition. An AFFF extinguisher can be directed in and around the engine bay in a manner that a powder extinguisher cannot.

A powder extinguisher works by disrupting the chemical process of the fire, by inhibiting the actions of the free radicals generated by the fire. Contrary to popular belief, it neither smothers nor cools the fire.

The problem of compaction of powder extinguishers can be to some degree over come by inverting the extinguisher regularly, say once a week. If you hold it to you ear as you do so, you should hear the powder falling. If you can't it is compacted and will not work when called for. You can try shaking it to see if it frees up, but generally, if it doesn't move, it's u/s.

The other issue with powder is can be disorientating when used in a confined space. Just imagine a coach full of school kids, then there is a fire and the powder extinguisher is used. They will be totally unable to see the exit, and wholly disoriented. It is also a total weston to clear up following discharge.
