When I bought my landy in Wales I had the RAC guru's inspect the thing top to bottom, full-on inspection. Cost me about £300, a little pricey but great piece of mind...
 
Rather than fix it i would consider solicitors letter. Offer to transport it back to him at your cost in exchange for refund and you wont take him to small claims

I've brought an additional engine

I've managed to sort one today complete with all the add ons as well as cam belt being done and water pump for me.. oh and delivered.
This is out of a disco and has done 111000 with part service history going back 7yrs.
This is coming from a customer of mine who re conditions gearboxes and does landrover work for a living. The vehicle was a customer of his so he knows the engine which is as good a risk as i think i can take on used rather than re con.

Just got the expense of fitting it now and if i can afford it i will try and change the transfer box to a disco one also, but not looking to affordable right now. I do have an old defender one here but no idea what its like.

Still nothing heard back from seller so will take other action shortly i guess.

Are there such things as fix it meets with the club where i might be able to get the transfer box done aswell as a few other bits, for beer exchange lol, that might be another way. Will do as much as i can myself but need the guidance.

i'm having engine fitted by a man who knows how very well, but also helping so i can save a few quid and learn.
was always my intention to put a re con gearbox etc in at some point as i did with my old one. Funds are very short now though having already paid for vehicle so just seeing if i can find a few ways of sorting some things without to much cost but not relying solely on my limited knowledge.
Don't mind getting my hands dirty though and will sort out seller when i have the exact cause sorted aswell as fixing cost.
Solicitor reckons thats my best route.

Ah thats good. I dont have anywhere to do work myself. Infact having a disco with hefty dent in it and bits being taken off everyday gets neighbours moaning no end. Its malvern full of busybodies:mad::mad:

Hopefully you have an easy job.
 
lets hope you can push the seller into a guilty corner and he offers to pay for the new engine for you good luck not that you need it just a plt of patiance whilst stripping out and refitting the new engine might as well go mad and clean the hole bay whilst you are doing it

I don't think i'll be as dedicated on the landy though, but will do my best to tidy her up.

If the seller would offer me back the money for the engine itself, i would be very pleased and cover the labour etc myself along with the time factor and hassle with getting it back and sorted myself.
It's the not speaking with me that's annoying me now.
 
I have had a chat with seller and initially no form of good will is being offered. As there are other issues of work stated as done, not having been done etc, as the evidence is showing and i can't fully discuss, i am now looking at some legal routes to resolve the issue that i can't fully discuss on an open forum.
Needless to say, i'm a man that does things in a proper manor and feel that with what i am gathering there is a strong possibility of small claims and i am hoping for a resolve to the issue before it gets that far as it would be very financially damaging for either party depending on which way it goes. Fortunately i have some support in this avenue and having already lost big time, i have no issue with going further.
Lets hope the seller shows good will and takes my request to cover half of the costs rather than all to avoid the further hassle for either of us.
I personally think that would be very fair to both of us.

I've never understood the mentality that seems to make honest people think that it's exceptable to throw integrety out the window when it comes to selling a vehicle
 
The 90 looks like fun and should be great once its fixed up.

As for claiming against the seller though, lets just say he sold it to you without knowing about the engine problem and you got as far as Northampton on the way home before it went bang. How does anyone know you werent thrashing the life out of it and it going bang was just bad luck? I'm not saying this is what happened but you can see where i'm coming from. I wouldnt be too confident on winning your case which could end up costing you more in the long run.

When i bought mine it had loads of little problems with it that i didnt notice when i picked it up (no brake lights working etc.) but i put this down to not checking it over properly and impulse buying.

Good luck with it all though and im sure you'll end up loving yours as much as i love mine once its all sorted.

I guess the answer to the statement of thrashing it is that its a fair comment, it all comes down to he said, she said. The benefit on my part is that there is another thing in this that i've not mentioned openly that looks like a very possible cause to the problem which puts in doubt something stated in writing that can strengthen my side of the argument. Also i have a statement from someone who had been following me and offered assistance, plus i had sat nav on and it is possible for speed info to be collected from these if it came to a criminal case which i am obviously hoping to avoid.

All these things arn't set in stone slam dunkers, but the risk is weighed both way which is why i'm trying to be fair in not asking for a full refund or even full costs of resolving the problem.

I do like to put decency into the scenario, and it may not be that the seller was fully aware, might even be that they were seen off somehow. Either way the trail will follow back somewhere and i can't simply say, OH WELL. and walk away from it as i'm sure the seller wouldn't if shoe on other foot, or anyone else if it happened to them.

It's a real shame, and i hope it all works out and i can enjoy some good times with the landy if i get her sorted.
I'm even now going to hold off from doing anything to her other than what's necessary to substantiate evidence until ok'd to by solicitor, and the police if they have to get involved which i have been advised to do if no resolve.

Monkey you penis :D you should have Pm'd me I would have happily helped you fit engine and box etc at my place. Im only a few miles from you and i have all the equipment. Would have only cost you beer money
