well i brought the faultmate MSV2 extreme with 2 leads and cd/instruction book. spent up now for this month, next month ill buy some software... dose this unit come with the mains to 12v pack or is that extra? :)

With RSW you will need to carry a laptop, the Extreme fits in the glove box and works without a PC on the road. Buy direct from BBS.
Can't see any problems with the above statement. I would say Data is wholly accurate.

Needs to be 12VDC, 2A output.
You could also buy the plugs from Maplin and make up your own lead using crocodile clips or plug to run off a battery charger, cigarette lighter socket, battery charger. The centre pin is the + terminal. You need the Faultmate powered with 12V to setup the Vehicle Explorer software on your PC/Laptop. Don't forget the Serial (RS232) to USB adaptor lead as most modern PC's don't have a serial port.

Hello Dougdotcom

As you will have noted our system uniquely utilizes what we call a vehicle server. This is actually a Miniature 300mhz PC that takes care of all the nitty gritty communications handling that you really just cannot do in any multi tasking environment such as Windows. One of the reasons our system is so renowned.

The vehicle server does require a bit of initial set up and can require updating from time to time and unless you fancy using your vehicle to power up the server for doing this, you can power the server up in other ways, hence the 12V dc socket and mains adapter options.

Irish, sorry to disagree for once, the Faultmate MSV Extreme requires 12 volts at 500ma so a 1 amp PSU is more than adequate. I would not recomend using a battery charger as the power source, some have an unregulated output of 20 volts with a huge amount of ripple when not connected to a battery, could be destructive.
A suitable regulated output PSU from CPC is £10.53 part number PW01657. It has the advantage that it will plug intoUK, European and US sockets, it is also quite small for portability.

12 volt adaptor is extra, you can get a suitable adaptor for about a tenner from www.cpc.co.uk I'll look up a part number for you later if you want.:D

Thanks for your info about the power supply, i saw this one (Just thought...it might not show up as ive now brought it but it was only £16 with Free postage.) :D and as its FREE postage it works out cheaper, and its the same company i brought the "faultmate" from, also i have the lead that gose to the mains socket. :)
HAPPY CHRISTMAS..
