Hi, the tank doesn't come apart but yes you can clean the it. I used jizer degreaser then rinsed it with cold water, then put it in a bucket of hot soapy water & 'shook it all about' 🙂. Final rinse with cold water again & dried it completely.

Was it really messy removing the tank? I have a syringe with which I can empty it, but not sure how to prevent massive leaks from the hoses that are connected to it when disconnecting?

As long as you keep the hoses straight up there will be irrelevant leak but you can use tools like in the following link to clamp them(just for example) pinch-off tools
