Am driving a friends 1999 Disco 2 TD5 Automatic and it's a little different to mine - some good and some bad. Trying to work out what's wrong with it - any ideas?
Got it on the Nanocom and found a dead MAF - swapped for another working one
Engine blows blue smoke on startup and inlet and intercooler full of oil - am I right in thinking that it's most likely to be blown turbo seals as the engine sounds pretty sweet (and quieter than mine!)?
Secondly it has a definite rattle - sounds like an aluminium heat shield but isn't as we have checked all of them. Possible that it disappears when the TC locks up (it's auto) but cannot be sure.
Google gave me about a dozen suggestions but none of the threads ended with 'great, that fixed it' so any ideas on what to check for?

I cured a tinny rattle issue recently. It was the small engine mounting heatshield under the car next to tye exhaust pipe. I tried to bend it back but it just sheared off. It cured the noise.

That would be the first logical presumption, unfortunately i dont see how to rule this out without changing the turbo:confused:

Is the rattling occuring around 2000RPM? Then it's probably the handbrake shoes that need some adjusting (at least on mine it was, Disco2 auto 1999).
Copy the link and you get the download with the technical bulletin about the issue.

Thanks all - we'll pull the handbrake and check first :)

Also one other issue - the oil was changed at the start of the journey and filled to the full notch - after 300 miles the oil is at the U of FULL - but it doesn't smell of diesel. Is there a way to test to see if there is diesel in the oil? We have another 300 miles to do tomorrow so can check to see if it increases any further or if he just overfilled at the start (maybe on a slope).
