Iv been looking for the aforementioned product but searches on our favourite search engine only provide either internal cages, or externals for defenders or disco 2. Does anyone know of a company that sells them ?

I'd put money on it isn't. In fact I work next door to customcages one of the biggest suppliers manufactures of roll cages in I think I'm right in sayin Europe. I'll find out the reasons why that isn't fia other than its not welded to the chassis. There's a cross missing in the roof part. And a cross diagonal through(one side to the other)

Are they taking the ****? Bolted to aluminium bodywork?!

I mean don't get me wrong if you want a cage purely for rubbing trees etc then fine it doesn't need to be cross braced but 1. If you're not careful you'll rip it off in 10 minutes and therefore what's the point cos the idea is you don't need to be careful anymore and 2. If you're doing it you might aswell do it properly then you can roll down the hill laughing all the way to the bottom.

That really is worrying telling people it's FIA, maybe they're saying the welding is FIA spec, not the cage, and intentionally being ambiguous?

What do you make of this company?

Off to see them on Wednesday regarding a Puma 110 Defender Dormobile custom cage.

That's the same cage/people that TopCat has .. it's feckin' ace!!

On Tims there's supports inside the bodywork that bolt or weld to the chassis .. at every point where the cage would pass through the body .. I reckon they're probably 3 or 4mm plate with 4 bolts at each pass-through. His also has the extra crossover roof and diagonals, but it'd be worth talking to the man, they'll customise them too .. ;)

If you go for it, have a look at his other stuff .. it's an amazing place!

Hang on a minute.

Whitbread are a very reputable company. That's fact.

Paul are you talking about the company in the first link? I have seen Tims cage and its great.

Now perhaps the guy on eBay somewhat foolishly didn't show any of the chassis bracing in the pic or perhaps chose not to fit it for the pics?

I have seen cages pictured like that before but there is much more work to do.

I notice the front wing has a big hole cut in it which indicates something is going on there, but it's bloody short sighted of them to not include better pics if there is much more to this cage than immediately meets the eye...

Hi sam, the company the op links to `markrace` is the guy i bought my cage from, (for folks who dont know me the 90 in the pic above) he makes cages for all kinds of race and competition vehicles and they are fia and msa aproved, the pictures on his ebay listing will be showing a cage on the jig vehicle they use to weld all the components together, the chassis mounting kits are very good, my cage mounts to the chassis in 8 different places. I priced a basic cage from my local 4x4 retailer, who i wont name, it was £1250 +vat and supplied by Markrace as it happens, this didnt include the roof cross bracing or the side bracing or the rear wrap arround. it cost me less than that for the full cage, with roof cross bars, rear diagonals, rear wrap arround, rock and tree sliders, and all the accosiated body to chassis mounts, all the bolt and fixings. all fully plasticoated. Well happy, the cage has had some right hammer and has been on its side. Cant recomend these guys enough

The cage in the eBay listing as is advertised or As is pictured isn't up to scratch. Doesn't matter what vehicle it's on. Jig or comp racer. He may well be able to supply the rest of the cage to make it fia spec. But as its being sold it isn't.

In addition to what TopCat has said and in my opinion FWIW-

I have been swatting up on cages for the Hornet as i want an external cage. There are published docs explaining requirements for a Discovery cage to meet in order to be approved ofr competition use.

In basic terms the outriggers are boxed and plated to strengthen them where they are used to mount the cage. other areas back to the chassis are also boxed and plated to the underside of the floor pan. All fixing points are bolted plates so the cage can be removed and repaired as necessary.

The approved (or one of) external cage design I have seen, runs inside the wings just in front of the bulkhead and secures to the outriggers/chassis. Behind the doors there is also another internal arrangement where this secures to the chassis, again boxed and plated. This is in addition to external tubework extending to incorporate sliders etc.

Without any internal strengthening I personally am not convinced that an external cage is strong enough to withstand anything other than a light roll whilst stationary - tipping over for arguments sake.

Would you really put the safety of your kids, family & friends not to mention yourself, in anything other than a proper cage? I wouldnt. Imagine going down a steep decline at nothing more than a walking pace and the vehicle going over the front end - 2700kg of Discovery landing on its roof this way would be horrendous.

I am sure that bolting a cage to the aluminium wings and quarter panels would withstand this accident......Not.

Finally I too would moan at the prices and lack of availability of the cages for the Discovery, BUT having helped make one (just for average green lane protection) I can say they are bloody hard to do unless you have the correct mandrel benders AND the material is expensive AND they are time consuming too. Anything less than £2000 all in would be cheap!

Thats why I havent got one on the Hornet - Cant afford the one that I would trust. Doesnt mean I wont put something on to aide with moving tree branches etc

Something advertised as not quite what you'll be getting or vague description or photos on an Ebay listing??? Shock horror!!!:rolleyes:

The cage on top-cats 90 looks very well put together. I like the little extras like the rear wrap around and the swing-a-away mounting point too as you normally don't see that kinda stuff on the cages.

Everybody that has dealt with him is recommending him so I highly doubt he'd sell out just a bare show-cage if you let him know what you intend using the disco for and he'd add the appropriate internal bars and reinforcement as necessary and quote a price accordingly.

Yep, would be definitely up there on being one of the biggest in Europe. I've fitted and helped others fit a good few of their cages and the design quality is hard to beat! Main parts of the cages almost stand on their own perfectly in the car without even being held or tacked together to test fit!
