does anyone know the thread size of the breather for both the axles on a 90?

im at work and its raining outside so im not looking. ive looked at the price of these and for a full wading kit, it is a farse! luckily we use a similar set-up for gas monitoring at work, so i should be able to knock up a full kit using push fit valves (less than a quid with 90deg bend) and 6mm pipe.

also, does the gearbox have the same set-up as the axles? i havent checked if ive got a breather on there.

where else may i need breathers apart from 2 axles and gearbox? i have a 1984 n/a 90.

cheers.

PS. ive done a search and cant find anything on thread size... so dont start your non-sense yella ffs. ;)

Not at all sure but will guess at them all being 1/4" bsp if it's any help. Some of them had a oddball filter type thing on the axles but at another guess the thread into the axle is going to be the same.

The ones on my Disco are 1/8" BSP, should be the same on a Defender. I used 90 elbows on the axles and tranfer box but had to keep the original banjo and use a coupler on the gearbox as a 90 fouled the hi/lo linkage.
Hope thats of some help.

cheers vop.

im going to look under my 90 this weekend and see what i have. because its through work i have to buy 5 of the connectors at a time and the pipe will be £25 for 30m.

im going to split the lot with my mate and make him a full set then hopefully make up an axle kit or something to sell on ebay with the rest of the pipe and make some £££ back!

im also going to use a tee section for the axles and tee section for the boxes. then i only have 2 pipes going up me snorkel and less pipe work :)

grunt says 1/4"
vos says 1/8"

hmmm...

25 quid sounds a bit much unless your getting the super flexible stuff, mine was about 16 quid for 30 mtrs.
I made myself a nice little manifold so I only have to run one pipe up (hav'nt got my snorkel yet, next on the shopping list), i've also fitted a breather pipe on the timing cover and run this to the manifold as well.

I'll double check on the thread size tommorow for you.

I'd go for 1/8" If you go for the elbows straight off the axle then you'll want 1/8" tapered.

Just seen Grunt's post, definatly 1/8" then, I personnaly went for the parrallel threads that have the o ring seal on them but tapers should be fine (get the ones that already have the thread seal on).

i havent seen them with taper threads in the cat. where did you get your bits from vop? im going to be paying around £2.50/ea. for connectors. the hose is a fairly rigid nylon (6mm). i think its the same stuff i use on my Reverse Osmosis unit for my fish water.

If i can get it cheaper thats good. i just wanted to do it cheaper than buying it from a dealer/fleabay.

thanks for your help guys, i think ive got the straight valves comeing through tomorrow for work. not sure if we ordered 1/8 or 1/4inch but i will nab. one and bring it home over the weekend. then i can place my order on monday :) unless i can get it from the same place as you vop.

cheers guys

G

I'm just thinking that with taper threads you can have them pointing in the right direction without over tightening them,
Sorry, should have said, you can get 90 elbows where the plastic bit swivels indipendant of the thread.

Got my bits from coswold hydraulics here in tewkesbury. I get 25% off list price on account, but they are ok blokes so will usually give you that if you say your looking at buying from them in future etc...

These are the bits you should need

CDPL06G01 6mm > 1/8" bspp (90 swivel elbow) £1.14ea x3
CDPU06 6mm (straight coupler) £1.07ea x1
CDPUT06 6mm (T) £1.65ea x2
PNFM6/4BK 6mm nylon tube (30m) £17.86

(the part no's are CDG pnumatics and prices from cotswold hydraulics)

Welcome to Cotswold Engineering Supplies

all the prices are plus VAT

(To make it even cheaper put the T in place of the coupler on the gearbox line (see pics) and connect the transfer box to it)

These are pics of my breathers using the same make parts as above (only i've used manifold and got one on the timing cover)

vop, you are an absolute star... i cannot ask for anything more than that, and you even took the trouble to take pics!

those prices are much cheaper than where i was getting them from, so screw that, i will get them from cotswold.

thanks for the part number. i looked at the site today, and had to phone them. but you just made my life so much easier :)

ive brought back the plugs from work which i need for gas monitoring, their 1/4" so i will soon find out what i need. id imagine its the same as yours.

cheers for everything,

G

yer they do them too... can also pick up off ebay. cheaper to run 2 Y connectors though.

G

Ps. well brought up old post.
