if you do what your planning and register it properly it will get a q plate from the peeps at the DVLA.

you can just not declare any changes and ride around but if you have a crash and its checked your insurance is void and if your stopped by the police they will not be able to tally your cars ID to the licence plate so likely will get took off ya.

Depends really.
On another forum a member had his galv chassis Defender stolen and quickly recovered by the police, I know unbelievable!
Anyway, you are right the police would not give it back until he provided proof of the chassis change. Once done they handed it back no problem.
 
So you are saying that all the landys running new galvanised chassis have the chance of this?
Would your average plod even know where to look for a chassis/vin number?

If you change chassis and engine/gearbox potentially.

Car Id major id points

Vin stamped on chassis
Bulkhead vin plate through window (later models)
Vin plate in engine bay
Engine stamp
Gearbox stamp

Normally they use 2 major components to confirm the car is what is says it is if its not clear or in question.

Change chassis/engine/gearbox you start to have issues.

If the chassis is like for like the engine and gearbox could be changed with no loss of points.

But if you read the DVLA rules “I” could interpret it to mean, well it’s not reasonably available but was available for said car within 10yrs of end of production, and could come under that rule of change.
Or “like for like’ get it sorted then later change an engine (number);).

But as the OP seems to have been scared off there’s not much point in discussing it.

Think your confusing the classic car stuff with building a kit car defender out of 3 generations of bits.

Be creative as you like with the dvla paperwork will just be put on the system and until a crash or police look at your fine.

Nope. Could you guarantee your LR is 100% as it left the factory?

I wasn’t being creative at all. How many series owners with drum brakes have upgraded to discs? It’s not a change of axle/suspension, it’s an upgrade and could be classed as a safety upgrade, which I also believe fulls within the accepted changes as not major so no issue.

Even have the paperwork/factory certs. To prove the IDs are original.

Just restored it so has galv chassis and bulkhead but used like for like on all parts 300tdi spec chassis, bulkhead and rear step style tub.

Only issue i have is i used Richard’s chassis so couldnt get stamped but know it and dont care about saving £300 a year road tax or doing an mot every year.

Even painted the original bmw BIARRITZ blue still but in raptor. ;-)

Axel would be changing leaf to springs or sailsbury to rover type eg structural parts. Not consumable parts like brakes or std springs for hd springs a spring is a spring.

True my chassis has no vin but i have recipt for the chassis so would be covered and the vin plate from my old bulkhead sits on my new bulkhead as well as my engine bay plate so i have 4/5 major id’s that tie to my reg. so im fine if popo look at it. Its also datatool dna registered for them too. So if stolen and chopped up i would still be ok.

Thanks to some EU rules that made their way over Brake disc conversion’s have been covered off by dvla as an allowance. Mainly because its a common safety upgrade and is a requirement in some countries that cars have to meet brake regulations but is an exception not a rule. Wouldn’t cover changing the suspension from leaf to spring for example.
 
Hi all

Apologies if this has been asked before or I've put it in the wrong place.

I have an old 2.5n/a defender, the chassis is rusted out and wants changing but I want to change the engine to a 300tdi as well. I have been looking at this and realise it may be easier to get a 300tdi chassis as it has all the correct mounts for the engine and gearbox. My question is how easy is it to fit all the other components from the old vechile over like axles and bodywork?

Sorry if it's a silly question I just don't want to make an expensive cock up!
Getting back to this.

Technically this is possible you will need r380 for the 300 tdi chassis otherwise you will have gearbox mount problems and different props (i think but not 100% as not sure what axels you have.)

r380,
slave and pushrod
R380 style crossmember for the lt230
R380 style shift linkage for the lt230
Front and rear drive shafts
A clutch kit
New exhaust
R380 trans tunnel
R380 bulkhead adapter

Loads of costs

Also This is why the q plate came up its a massive change. Or you end up with a kit car/loads of different parts.
