Its pretty shocking that they rev it for so long Im not really sure what benefit as regards an emissions test that will give as for the K series engine its actually a very strong engine its the position of the thermostat which is the problem, the best thing you could do is get a thermostat upgrade kit which puts the thermostat in a better position.

Took a black expansion cap from another freelander. The fit was brilliant as opposed to the 'yellow' one that was there previously. I'm now totally guessing that it was my own stupidity. Never buy an expansion cap for £2.25 on ebay. I had bought TWO of them here. Suspected the first one of leaking so replaced with the second one. The second was the one that launched into outer space.

That was your problem all along, wrong cap!!!

i think id be looking for another reason pressure got that high if it was 5 mins

True and I agree worth investigating if in doubt......, but even if the stat was shut, the heater matrix takes out a fair bit of heat, especially when heater fan on position 3 or 4.

His rad fans didn't kick in because the system wasn't pressurising to the norm ~ 1.1 bar, the fans only come on at 102 oC, the system won't reach this temp with a leaky or badly seated cap.

My money is on the cap and with an OEM now fitted, his worries should be no more ;)

Thanks guys very much. I'm going with the OEM cap as the fix as the quality/build/fit is chalk and cheese to the 'yellow' one. Learned my lesson there. Repeating above...my stupidity.

But if you can't laugh at yourself.....

I recently moved from Saab 900's (pre-93) to Freelanders cause i needed a jeep. Used to have a LR Series 3 but sold it. Loved it. . Now have four freelanders all k series, mine, wife's, parts one (ish) and impulse buy with clutch stuck on. They sell low here in Ireland. People seem to avoid the petrol one and the HG potential issue. I see the second as a challenge to avoid and have now learned a lot about the cooling side which seems to be a must in freelander world.

Have a pressure test kit but not a correcponding cap. Will make one from an OEM part :)

Again, thanks again for the above advice. It was ahuge help as i worked through to the crap cap.
