Hi all,

The middle section on my defender 90 200tdi has gone to rust heaven!

Am considering replacing it with a stainless mid section and a few questions have sprung to mind...

1. What effect do the "sport utility" stainless systems have on turbo functioning and general on-road performance - the advertising blurb states they can improve performance and mpg "as part of a tuning kit" but i'm a bit worried the lack of silencers might effect the back pressure to the turbo. and what would a "tuning kit" consist of anyway?

2. are there any issues with having a stainless mid section but the rest of the sytem being mild steel?

3. how much more noise do they produce?... particularly inside the cab

Any advice would be most welcome!

... maybe i should just get the JB-weld out and patch the old one up!

Hi,
Fitted one to my 200Tdi about a month ago. I did this as it needed doing and it got rid of the front silencer that got a bit of a bashing off-road. I have not noticed any real performance gains or reduction since, or any better MPG, although I don't tend to worry about this much so havn't looked at it in any depth.
As for noise, I cannot tell the difference in the cab (90 van body) but it is slightly more noisy at the tailpipe and you can tell it is more free flowing.
No issues mixing mild and stainless.
I have the standard tail pipe at the moment but will be ditching that for a side exit as fund allow (read this as when other things stop going wrong with it and I can spare the cash!)

Hope this helps,

i have a straight through centre section on my 200 tdi defender 90 with standard back box then custum side exited by myself :D (was told centre section was stainless wen ordered) and it wasnt so be careful some suppliers are that dull

as for if its a stainless centre on mild steel back box etc there will be no effect :p

as for effects it will give a slightly better go facter and should impover mpg they say (i never really noticed the differene)

they also say it makes it loader i also didnt think this maybe loader at like 50-70 but defenders are anyway :D

other than that id suggest it just make sure your 100% buying a stainless one if your paying the price for one i got mine of ebay maybe stay away from there and get one from MandM 4x4 i have found these guys rule at everything landrover and there local to me wich helps:D

Putting mild steal and stainlless together and heating it up will cause corrosion between the two dissimilar metals, however to what extent this occurs and which one will corrode more is down to the grade of stainless you get supplied with.

A4 stainless is designed to be submersed in water all the time so will do better, but his is£££££££££.

If your going to go for stainless then I'd replace the whole lot, however my mild steal middle section has last a long time and only has a small bandaged hole in it and is running strong.
