I have a stainless steel performance muffler built for the a 2.5L BMW, will install that to see how it sounds with the resonator removed.

Is the side exit legal in the UK?

Yes there's nothing illegal about it,
It will only fail MOT if you remove the Cat and you've got a new shiney Puma defender that are fitted with them from factory
