Exhaust Manifold - Heat wrap instead of heat shield?

Hi,

Just working through what I need to reassemble after taking heads off, and one specific question.

Can/Should I use heat wrap tape on the manifolds instead of trying to get heat shields? I really buggered mine up getting em off, and struggling to find any online - plus I'm thinking how much easier it would be to remove again later without that damn heat shield!

I realise though that wrap can makre the pipes even hotter, but at same time reduce under bonnet temp - but is this rise in temp within the exhaust too much for the heads to bear?

Anyone used wrap? if so, recommendations on where to buy?

Not a good idea putting wrap on cast manifolds (cracks em)...tho if you got something else it would make sense I guess.

aren't the manifolds tubular steel?

Neither of my ranges have their heat shields on and I have never had any issues including idling in traffic.
