Seen a low mileage 95 110 which has according to seller has a four pot Perkins engine. Not worried that these are slow as would only use for local excursions, dogs etc but are engines reliable,do they over heat, are many mechanics around who can fix them and are parts easy/ cheap to obtain.

A very solid engine, is it a 4/203 or a 4/236? Bulletproof, gear driven throughout. Parts are available, not as cheap as they once were, but not too bad.
Most old school mechanics will love working on it, and should have no difficulty doing so! :)

Thanks for the info...no idea which engine it is,what's the difference between the two.The seller just said it was a 2.5 diesel but will ask him for more info.

Well, cancel what I said before, then.
The Perkins engines I have had in landies have been as above, but they are 3.33 litre and 3.6 litre, I think.
Try googling Perkins Prima, or searching on the site, I have heard they were fitted in landies sometimes, but not had one myself. No idea what capacity they are.

Have to ask but what is the relevance of the title of the thread, the title is "Ex MOD Defender advice" but the only query is about a type of engine that wasn't fitted to MOD LR's?
Pedantic I know but I was wondering if there was some confusion somewhere. o_O

The seller told me it's a 2.5 litre Perkins 4 pot engine in the landrover.I tried googling it but got nowhere so asked on here what this so called engine is,parts availability, reliability etc.
At the moment it seems like the seller was telling me Porkies lol.

Landrover engines often weren't that great one way or another, and there is a long history of people re-engining with other units. Many conversion kits are sold for this purpose!

Any link to pics of the engine? Think you really need to accurately identify it before we can give much feedback! :)

Err yes well aware of that, done many engine conversions myself in my **-years of LR ownership. ;)

My query was about the possibility of not getting the most hits on the thread because of a misleading title.
If "Perkins conversion" was in there somewhere then it might have attracted views from people who are familiar with the engine and could offer advice......... people who might not read a thread about an ex-MOD Defender for instance.

As already stated, without definite identification, a photo (or two) would be a good place to start.

Fair enough! :) See what you mean!
It did attract someone who is familiar with the engines! I have had several, and serviced many more! :) Just not sure at the moment which engine it is I am supposed to be familiarising with! :D

This is becoming so confusing lol...my thread is not misleading as the the seller told me he has an ex MOD landrover for sale with original engine...now when I enquired about what 2.5l diesel engine was in the Landry he told me he thought it was a four pot Perkins.....at this point I googled it and found nothing so asked on here......hope that now clears things up lol.

I don't think anyone was blaming you, Red Soul, he was merely suggesting that you might get better results if you had worded your question differently! :)
And most of lz seniors enjoy bickering about minutiae, it is like philosopher arguing about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin! ;)

So. Any developments on capacity or pics of the engine?

Quite liked the van but the seller is now not answering questions about engine...unfortunately this is not the first time this has happened on eBay...didn't realise it was going to be such a task buying a gen landrover that doesn't need a fortune spent on it as soon as you buy it.

Sounds like the seller has confused the issue by mentioning that he thinks the original engine is a Perkins (which it clearly is not).

If the 110 is fitted with the original 2.5NA D (4cyl) engine that it left the factory with then it is a fine (if slightly underpowered) power-plant. They are very under-stressed and correctly serviced they will go for years (they seem to survive very will without servicing!) but look after it and it will look after you. In a 110 they can appear a bit sluggish but will allow you to cruise all day at 60-65MPH while returning a figure close to 30MPG.
Servicing is easy and very straightforward, if there is no history then allow for a new cambelt along with the fluids, filters etc but as long as it is running ok and gets through the MOT emissions then you will be fine.

30mpg no problem in my 2.5 N/A 90", close to 35 on long cruising runs - measured many times. You won't get that sitting at 60 though, more like 50mph. I think 25mpg plus for a 110 would be normal.
The Perkins 4 cyl may have even less power, but should be similarly robust - going by their reputation.

If it's original fitment engine the. It isn't Perkins but a standard landrover 2.5 non turbo diesel.

A reasonable engine, if a bit pedestrian, does the job but don't expect masses of performance. Quite bulletproof though if looked after and ridiculously easy to work on

The seller has finally replied and now says it's a 4 cylinder rover diesel 2.5 litre engine....is that the original engine these vans came with...thanks all for the response so far.

Yes, standard in that. 2.5 naturally aspirated, as its known in the trade.
Usually vans are known as hard tops in landrover circles! ;) :)
