can you just lob the degraded and powderised old active carbon rods and deteriorated foam/filter bits and leave the canister in place empty?
 
it removes hydrocarbons from petrol fumes before they reach the air outside as the tank vents. trouble is with age they deteriorate and clog so it can take ages to fill up because the air can't get out of the petrol tank as the new petrol tries to get in, so the petrol pump cuts out all the time.

another modern pita, gone are the good old days when the tank just vented straight to the outside.

I'm going to make the assumption that your motor is out of warranty :rolleyes:

Chop the pipes off and let it breathe, I mean we had petrol engined vehicles for a hundred years before that junk got fitted, never saw the point to it in the first, just a waste of money and effort for so little reward.
