wouldnt a larger AH alternator and split charger and a deep cycle marine batt do the same job?

lol hello, mention the devil and he shall apear
You can use them in parallel, the only problem is that if for some reason on goes tits up or there is a power drain both get drained down, that's why.
My answer is run one off a second alternator, a number of reasons.
1. it means that the system is always self sufficient,
2. It means you always got a spare alternator with you.
3. If your main alternator fails and sizzes up solid you can in a few minutes replace it , as with a 300tdi engine the fan belt also drives the PAS pump, and the water pump.......I ve had that happen when out off roading.
if you got a 300tdi engine its the way i would go......as it happens I am just working on making a bracket for it
Stu did you get anymore pics today.
I think it's a case of horses for courses, if you have the bolt holes and space(air con pump not there) to install another, why not. if not split charger and decent batteries are equally as good.
I feel a discussion/argument coming on.
Fan tastic, cheers mate! I need to get a bigger battery first! (the one I've got is out of a fiat 127 I reckon!
I worry if I have to flash my lights incase it drains it! Not to good if winching out of somewhere!
Am gonna look at getting 2 batteries and a split charge system.

would milage bother you ? im seeing 2.5TD Disco's with over 200,000 miles
you got a welder now, you could take a pattern of fixing brackets off mine, get a pre made winch tray and buy some HD tube and go for it. Sure you've got the know how.
Geoff I like that idea, will have a nosie at yours next weekend when we destroy matt's motor
Was Just thinking of letting matt do it cause it needs to be strong and me welding ain't up to scratch yet
