Disco 2 Error Code Help

Having been introduced to Nanocom recently and now owning one I have been trying to diagnose a problem that happened the other day, but sods law you drive around for days and it does not show up at all, and then today it did! Yippee, or Bugger, anyway I had the dreaded Limp Mode M&S flashing, the Gear Lever indication on the dash also flashing and the red indicator of the gear stick also flashing.

Plugged in the Nanocom and received the following error codes:

Car is a 2001 td5 Automatic.

Engine Codes:

(3,5) DRIVER DEMAND PROBLEM 1, (LOGGED HIGH).
---
(20,2) TURBOCHARGER OVERBOOSTING, (LOGGED).
---
(22,1) ROAD SPEED MISSING, (LOGGED).

Cannot find anything on these, the codes seem to be nanocom specific, so ny pointers would be good, cannot find any info out on the Nanocom site either.

Gearbox Codes:

CODE P1884 CAN MESSAGE MD_IND INVALID (FLAG F_TL_MES)
---
CODE P1843 CAN TIMEOUT MONITORING
---
CODE P1842 CAN LEVEL MONITORING
---
CODE P0705 POSITION SWITCH MONITORING

Any help diagnosing this lot would be much appreciated. I did find on here somewhere stating the the M&S lights could be a faulty or low battery with regards to voltage, battery is a new (2 months old) YGD100860 from Rimmer Bros, apparently heavy duty battery and currently reads 12.8 Volts cold and battery tester gives it 862 CCA so I presume this is OK, presently on a Intelligent Charger for 2 days to make sure that it is fully charged.

Also MAF Filter was replaced on this last weekend.

Any help would be much appreciated, especially for the Nanocom codes and really at a loss regarding these.

Thanks Griff for the info, I have tried in the past to register on that site but I never get the registration process to complete, just keeps going round and round after hitting submit and not getting any further.

Did you clear them and they ALL came back after a drive? if not do that and read again first time after the limp mode kicks in then i'll tell you more cos 3 of the gearbox codes are with limp mode and one not while only the driver demand code from the engine can cause limp mode but it would trigger gearbox code which is not there now

anyway the most common is XYZ switch failure which is backed up by the 0705 code

if you want to know everything about the gearbox codes you find them all in the attached document chapter 5.2, the engine codes are not explained in offical documents, i confirm that the "driver demand" code is about the TPS input, the overboost is obvious what it is and the "road speed missing" is usually intermittent and with no effect as long as your speedometer is working, it used to come after the vehicle hits a bump

Thanks a lot for the info 'Sierrafery', great find, does not make a lot of sense but the more that I look at what I can find here it certainly is looking like the XYZ Switch, that said I read another post about checking some connections under the passenger side glove box and also under the centre console, no harm in trying the cheaper options first, also a couple of YouTube video's have said about checking out the Air Con coolant tube that exits apparently just above the XYZ switch and may be the cause of this switch going wrong, again cheaper than the switch so will check out. If all these fail I will bite the bullet and take the switch off and see about cleaning it out first before replacing with new.

Further to the above info, the speedo is working great, don't suppose that you know where the road speed sensor is on a D2?

There is no sensor for that, the VSS is calculated and delivered by the SLABS ECU based on wheel speed sensor inputs but the signal is on the same wire for the engine ECU and speedo so if it was really missing the speedo would not work
 
+1 on cleaning out the XYZ switch before going to the expense of a new one, they ain't cheap.
Much on t'internet about how to do it. I like your way of thinking re cheaper options first!!!
 
Cleared down the codes today and took it for a quick spin, so far no Limp Mode but have to pop to town later so that should give it a bit more miles to fail on.

I have been trying to check through the wiring as per instructions on this site via a couple of other threads, I cannot seem to locate these Connectors:

  • C0668 (Suggested check pin 3)
  • C0675 (Suggested check pin 8 for 12v)
  • C0681 (Suggested check pin 3).

Don't suppose anyone has a good link to the Wiring Diagram for the Discovery 2, Downloaded the Workshop Manual and tried a search for these numbers but could not locate any of them, any help on locating these connectors would be much appreciated and also if anyone knows what voltages should be associated with the connections it would be a great help, and also where to find them and what they look like would also be very helpful.
 
Quick updates as in town having a coffee, after clearing down the codes before leaving home, they reappeared almost instantly after doing a 5 point turn trying to get out of the drive, I cleared them down again after I got to town, this time using the iCareSoft LR v2 reader which I left in the car as a hope to keep me out of Limp Mode, will see how long this lasts, hoping for a good weekend so I do some cable tracing, will keep this thread updated as I find more things out, thanks again for all that have helped, it means so much to me, a kindness I hope I can pay back one day.

The electrical library is especially useful as it gives a picture and description of where to find all the electrical connectors.
There are a couple of things you should be aware of if you don already know them.
When the electronic automatic transmission ecu logs a fault which triggers the default position of flashing m+s lights and the limp mode in the gear box, this default position is maintained even if the fault corrects itself and is no longer present, the only way to clear this default position is to power down the system by turning the ignition off.
The EAT monitoring of the gear position system is very time sensitive, if a fault is present for longer than 100 micro seconds, this is logged and the default position of limp mode and flashing m+s lights initiated.

These two facts make it very difficult to determine whether an intermittent fault is actually present when you are looking for it.

Bearing this in mind , it is possible to the see the outputs of wxyz circuits as read by the EAT and BCU ecus when cycling from P to 1 using your nanocom and by making a table of the results compare them with a table from the automatic transmission section 44-12 from the workshop manual.
I suggest making a table of results as for some reason I need to reverse the wxyz to read zyxw in one ecu table (cannot remember which) to get matching readings.
By doing this you may be able to identify where the fault is if it is present.
 
Cheers Roy, Really appreciate that, will play this weekend and as you mentioned I will try and create a table and see if it sheds any light. The problem with the M & S lights has only occurred with me this last week, but I have had to clear them now about 6 times in the last few days, this evening alone I cleared it before leaving for town, then again when I reached town, but they did not surface at all on the way home from town at all, I am hoping that its a loose wire or a brake somewhere, but if anything its getting me to know the vehicle a bit better.

Thanks again for the info, Just a quick one though, Managed to find and download the first two, but cannot find the third anywhere, managed to locate Left Hand Drive version for 2003, but as mine is a tad earlier I am not sure what is different and also if there are any differences between the LHD and the RHD versions, aren't they all Petrol in the USA?

IMO circuit diagrams will not help in this particular issue. :( ... at least not untill the switch is ruled out

This vehicle is prone to wear in the loom passing over the top of the transmission, it wears at the point of the P clip. Maybe this could be causing intermittent faults.
