So I decided to buy a
Petromax.de - Have a look at the long-established high-pressure lanterns Petromax and the differences between the HK500 and HK150 series. HK500 with top reflector.

Now as there are numerous versions of this build by various Chinese companies and the brass chromed version seems the most durable pariffin powered 400w/500cp

Various claims by britelyt who claim multi fuel!
But lamp makers guild say the design for petrol is dangerous and explodes as documented on several occasions due to washer failure, rubber tipped metering valve and mantle failure damaging soldier joints. ( general consensus is paraffin only)

The Adams corp of America claim multi fuel modified with needle valve etc- but no longer available.

So I phone up uk supplier to confirm it is paraffin only, question if the Nato finish is more resistant than the chrome over brass and to order.
So after what can be only described as a hill billy aggressive manner and graphic explanation of why britelyt and coleman are crap, they couldn't sell me one as out of stock, couldn't or wouldn't take a payment and wanted to charge 14% more:doh: in January and only one year guarantee:doh:

I decided the lamp has better lifespan compared to Coleman and a 2 year guarantee according to the german petromax.

the only one cheap is on ebay and I'm beginning to seriously wonder if it is worth the hassle:confused:

If you want a lamp that works .....

Just buy a Coleman Northstar ....END of !!!!!

Runs on peccy so about the cheapest to run AND if you buy the Northstar it's got push button ignition AND No fannying about preheating it with meths .

Yep they are more expensive BUT they do last (ive had mine for about 10 years now along with 2 burner and a 3 burner petrol cookers )
 
Is it worth buying an old tilley/aladdin/vapourex(?) lamp and refurbishing it? They all run on paraffin and all the parts seem to be still available.

If you're happy needing to pre-heat with meths then the answer is yes.

I've got two tilleys,the youngest of which is 30 years old.As you say, parts are freely available and in fact you can still buy new Tilley lamps as they are still made. Avoid the fleabay "bits in a box" lamps where the owners think they're selling you a rare antique,but don't be put off by one needing new vapouriser/seals etc. There are thousands of working lamps out there.

Would that be propane? and whats the cost there in UK?

Iv'e used the white gas for 45 yrs and very happy with them but just a little messy when handling the fuel. Never used a petrol . But am thinking of switching to the propane stove and lantern as wouldn't have the issue of a fuel spill in the back of a 110.

PROPANE ???? Deff not,
Bloody dear way of having light/heat/cooking ....

Petrol all the way OK petrol is expensive BUT it works a hell of a lot cheaper than propane/butane cylinders or anything on paraffin.
People flap about using petrol cookers/lanterns BUT if used safely as you would with a propane item .....they really are safe and reliable (spot of redex injector in with the unleaded for maintainance purposes now and again )

IF you want to have some real fun with petrol cookers ......

Can't say ah've had any probs wi' me Coleman twin mantel dual fuel (unleaded) fur over 10 - 15 years or so... apart from breakin' the odd mantel when ah was fishin' from the rocks! ;):D
 
Tilley all the way, advantages over the others,
well the biggest is they are UK made, yes made here, not in china or india or some other far eastern country.
I've got 1940's vintage I use with my scout troop, parts are easy to get and they give a good clean light when looked after, yes that old chesnut - maintenance.
mind you as landy owners we dont have to that do we :)

that said I've also got new ones as well, nothing quite as nice as sitting by your tent with some mates drinking a beer with the steady hiss of a tilley beside you after good day out.
