HI, we’re new to landrover here and we are doing up a series 3 petrol 1975 as a school project. We plan to rebuild the engine as front and rear of crank is leaking and white smoke on start up.
Does anyone have info on crank seal replacement and best place to source them from?
We will be replacing head gasket – is a copper replacement the best one to go for?
I’m guessing that the engine is lifted off the box and the box stays in situ? Do I need the front floors and tunnel removed to get to all bell-housing bolts?
Any info & pictures/threads would be a big help.
We have already started to fabricate and weld on new chassis parts – plan to keep it as original as possible.

Nice project to learn on. Parts supply is good try Google and you will come up with John Craddock, Paddock Spares and loads of others. The forum sponsor Famous Four is at the top of the page.
Floor and tunnel out to get at the bolts. Front slam panel with radiator out and bonnet propped open wide or lifted off will be all required for access.
Rear crank seals are interesting to do,fronts easy. White smoke could be a head gasket.
Keep an eye on spanner sizes series threes have a mix of metric and imperial as well as some old whitworth size stuff. 1975 may not have gone to metric, later stuff did for some of the fixings. One last thing when buying parts avoid "Britpart" like the plague so if they offer you parts in a blue box reject them.
 
Rear crank seal on a 3mb is a tricky job and best done with a special tool otherwise it will leak. Its to do with setting the cork t pieces in properly. Follow the green bible word for word and make the tool or borrow one from someone maybe?

Thanks for the replies, what is the 'green bible' which you refer to?

I'm also looking for drivers side glass, doors are not original they look to me like early 90 defender doors - any recommendations?

Ian, The "green bible" is Land Rover workshop manual. I think now available on CD.
Old Land Rovers do tend to have a miss match of parts, where a previous owner fitted something to keep it going. This is usually done as the most cost effective at the time.
You will need to do a bit of looking at your doors to find out. Post some pictures the guys on here will help you.
 
As above, the parts and workshop manuals are a great aid, full of exploded diagrams that show exactly how all the parts go together to make up the vehicle, and the part numbers make ordering easy.

I remember we had mini engines to strip and rebuild in school, can't beat hands on experience. I've found the mix of practical and maths/physics learning stayed with me for life.
