My 110 CSW has been retrofitted with a 200tdi but there is now a huge space between the radiator and the fan. There is a new thermometer fitted so I can see the engine temp (usually about 67c)but the guy who's guiding me through this project reckons that before I tow anything I ought to fit an electric fan onto the rear of the rad. I wonder whether this needs doing anyway, as we approach the blistering heat of summer, to protect the vehicle in traffic at low speed.

Thing is, I havent really got a mental image of what such a fan looks like or whether its a standard item or one I need to fabricate.

Anyone offer a headsup?

David

I have similar set up in my 1990 90 and do have an electric fan a Kenlow with automatic stat operation.
Unless it gets very hot weather [rare around here] towing is the only time it comes on and if that's what you are doing I would fit one after all you do not want to cook the thing.

I have a 1990, 200tdi, 110. I fitted a Kenlowe electric fan fully automatic. I live in the South of France where temperatures are in the high thirties during the summer. Normal driving I might hear the fan come on maybe twice a year. I did in fact drive it up a long hill without any fan in 35C and the temp did creep up into the red.
I did a trip across Morocco with the electric fan and it worked fine. However I always found myself keeping and eye on the temperature gauge and waiting for it to trip in.
The reason I went electric was I had hoped there would be a quicker warm up time on the engine in the winter. It made no difference at all. People say fuel economy is better with an electric fan. I never noticed any difference what so ever.
I have since gone back to the Viscous fan for piece of mind. I don't have to keep an eye on the temp gauge or worry about a electrical problems.. You can buy a viscos fan for about £40 plus you need the cowling. I like to try and keep my 200tdi as original as possible.

Don't think you'll need a fan for what you are planning to do, especially as your engine is running cold anyway (it should be around 88 degrees). The viscous fans are cheap and easy enough to fit, but the cowls are harder to come buy, as they are no longer made. You can buy a decent fan from Magill Motorsports for less than £40.

You could just keep a viscous fan to hand and fit during hot weather or if heavy towing.Water pumps last longer without a fan fitted.
