Egt advise please

hi all

I've searched for an answer but got sick of looking before I found what I was looking for

I've got my self an egt gauge for my disco because I've been having a bit of a play around with things and I don't want to go too far, but my question is what is a known or recommended safe max temp for the 300 please?

Any advice gratefully received

I was told that the max temp for the Ali head on a 300 is 720 degrees C. But as we are not measuring the temp of the head, but rather the EGT, I limit myself to 600. I find that this, even in a fairly high state of tune takes some getting to - only leathering it up long steep hills.

As you will see if you watch the gauge, the temp keeps rising for a short time after you have reduced the throttle, so you might like to bear this in mind - so, IOW, approaching 550, its time to slow down a bit.....

You might also like to make absolutely sure your alternator heat shield is in place, and in good condition. Ask me how I know this

if you space it out from the alternator, to get some more airflow, you might find this advantageous, I used studding couplers - I will try to post a pic later. Don't forget the other heat shield at the rear of the inlet plenum too !!

Plenty of smoke inside a Disco, which a very hot engine might want to let out....

Good plan cheers. The one at the rear is defo there ta. I always think there's quite a bit of heat under the bonnet but it was like this at standard power, I've taken the fan off tho and keep it in the back but I can't remember how warm it got under there with it on. I might re fit it now tho and get some more flow back under there

Disco1BFG...Are ya there

There's no heat shield on the alternator that I can see, apart from a silver insulated sleeve around the wires! If it's not too much trouble would you be able to dig a pic out of yours please. I'd put a pic of mine up but I've no idea how to do such things ha

Yeah that's a nice new lookin piece of kit there mate, with a nice lookin heat shield aswell. Rite I need to be on to that

Aye, you did that right. Alternator Heat shields are on the bay of fleas...ERR4859 - Plenum heat shield ESR2422

As for new, it ain't new - I just look after it (!!), sad, I know, but i intend it lasting me out. not interested in modern 'lectronical s**t.

IMHO, cheaper than my time to make a dual layer shield worth having. Tis your alternator tho...

My EGT gauge is mounted in a pod on the top of the dash with a boost gauge and transmission oil temp. Pod was about £8 off the bay. ( there's a pic on here somwhere )
