Hi all,

Sorry to lump 2 queries together but need some help, first the EGR Cooler. I have an annoying water leak which I tracked to a hose that goes over the auto gearbox an enquiry to a main dealer, via my daughter in the UK reveal that a hose pack would cost over £185 + VAT! So I ventured further being a bit tight fisted and poor and found that the hose was to (or from) the EGR Cooler. Now I have already completed the EGR Mod so if I were to remove the cooler and bung up the hose endings, would this be a good idea?

Secondly, again via my daughter, I have 8 litre bottles of liquid gold AKA LR ATF 402 (STC50531) at £14 per litre with a 10% discount for buying 8. My son in law got them out to me. All set now to do an oil change following every procedure documented here and elsewhere trouble is I have located correct level plug and the drain plug but cannot locate the filler bung; which I am led to believe is rubber. All I have atop of the gearbox is metal bolt heads.
Could some kind LR type please advise me which/where is the bung please?

While I am on, does anyone have/know where I can get a KPH speedo dial from? I live overseas and in an KPH area.

Ta to everyone for any help you can give.:)

No very bad idea [dont do it] . . . . .the filler is on rhs front of engine compartment look down to see it ,you will need an an adaptor to fill it, i used the adaptor end of a silicone cartridge and a bit of garden water hose. . . . . .but i'm clever and a rockit injunear :)

Hi mick,

The rubber filler bung / stopper is black (of course it would be, it's a LandRover) so difficult to see.

It's awkward as ming says - hidden away under a fat rubber hose. Search for it looking down near the LH front corner of the battery tray, as you look at the engine. A little to the left and forward - a little black circle is all you'll see.

I lifted it up and out using my thumb-nail.

It's quite small in diameter so I managed to find a small kitchen funnel that entered a a good bit into the filler hole. I had a long flexible filler funnel and poured VERY slowly as it takes time for the fluid to enter - if you rush it - all you get is an air-lock and the lovely 'liquid-gold' overflows.

Possibly you've read my recent thread on the job:

Good luck.

Hi Singvogel and Ming for your swift replies, I think I have now found the bung-mine has a raised part that looks just right for grabbing with some long nosed pliers.
Must say Ming, I have to cure this water leak from the EGR cooler hose so will ponder over your advise not to remove. As I see it all I am doing is taking away the cooler for an item that is no longer there i.e. the EGR unit, that is the cooler for the exhaust gases that are not passing through said EGR unit.
Thanks again
Mick

They have changed the hoses that come over the gearbox on mine 2006 auto they are metal pipes, that will save them rubbing on the gearbox

My mistake  thought you ment the oil cooler

Ming,

In the end i did not remove the cooler 'cos i simply could'nt-the cooler is held to the engine with 3 bolts and although you can get to 2 of them, the 3rd is near on impossible to remove without a major strip of the air cleaner box/MAF assembly.
So I left it in situ and chopped off the disc from my EGR bypass assy and clip it to the end of the cooler. The hoses were then duly chopped (both inlet and outlet) and bunged up with large bolts-not pretty but works a treat and the cooler does not get unduly hot.

teddywood,

The hose that you changed was the same as mine, gone all 'squigy' in fact I find it hard to understand how it did not chuck out all the coolant under pressure. All I can say is that in this particular circuit of the cooling system is not under the same pressure as the engine cooling system...but I have no idea how this is achieved, anyway job done.......must now get the3 black marker pen out for those very shiny bolt heads!!

Finally thanks to all for help

Mick
